TARD ROOMMATE update

now he is pretending nothing ever happened and trying to be nice to everyone. by 'nice' i mean he followed me around the house while i went from living room into kitchen, cooked chickpea vindaloo for dinner, and then up to my room, telling one long, boring, terrible story about his hometown of Holliston, MA. JUST LEAVE ME ALONE.

MORE NEWS:

TR announced tonight that he's giving us 30 days' notice and moving out at the end of June. Of course this proves him to be an agreement-breaking asshole, but privately, this isn't exactly bad--he paid June rent (unless they stop payment on the check), and we have two months' security, so unless he trashes his room, we could be free of him come Jun 30th, with two empty months of rent paid. remains to be seen if he legally pursues that money or not.

Is it sketchy if I call the landlord Wednesday morning and say "When you get our checks, cash them IMMEDIATELY, because one of our roommates is being sketchy?" Or would he appreciate that? I don't want to make him think we're less stable and reliable unless it's necessary, and I have no evidence Jeff is going to stop payment on his recently-mailed check. But just in case...?

(the landlord usually doesn't cash them until the 15th or so, out of laziness, likely, but possibly because the guy whose name is on the checks is travelling all the time?)

also, to give this thread the kick it needs:

call him and tell him that you're kicking someone out and he should cash the check because the guy is being sort of a cheapskate. that's what i would say. but point out somehow, if you do call, that a way more obviously responsible person is of course moving in.

anyway, i'm glad he's leaving. screw him.

p.s. with ma. law the way it is, it'll be a serious pain in the ass for him to sue you for the security deposit. FYI. call legal aid and ask them what you should do if he does.

well, i talked to my housing-advocate-AIDS-Action friend and she gave me a pretty good outline, and my taking-the-bar-next-month friend filled in some blanks, so i think we're on OKAY legal footing.

the way i see it, if he basically says "we never had a contract for me to stay until 8/31", then we can say "we never had a contract for you with the $1300 you gave us". we don't want to screw him, but just pay the rent until 8/31.
