I suggest going to a real paint store (not a home improvement store) and asking the staff what they suggest. Lacquer is still used I am sure on many guitars, but man is it tough to work with. Polyurethane may be better, but the most important thing about painting, be it a house, car, guitar, plastic model.... whatever is the prep work.
