The Appeal of Darkness

For me music is a whole different world. My life is okay, but this other world is so fantastic and strange at the same time. There is so many question in music that dosen`t have an answer and thats why I love and care about music so much. Especially Opeth.

Cheers again mate...

PS - could sure use some of that NT weather down here in Sydney, it's bloody freezing dude!
Hah, dont be so sure. It's the coldest day of the year. We've had a top of about 25, and at the moment its about 15. I swear it has never been so cold.

I strongly agree with you ShroudOfDusk.

People have been taught "dark is bad/dark is wrong" etc etc.

How limiting is that?!

Social conditioning condones lack of individuality, it promotes "genericism", and creates a boring world, in which the majority (or what I coin, "The Blind Ones") prefer to exist because it gives them less reason to think and explore themselves, other people and the world around them.

It just goes to show, that a minority, such as some of us here, are not afraid of, nor adhere to, such limitations.
As I mentioned, it's due to society being based upon Judeo-Christian morals and principles. While these dont effect people's inhibitions so much, they do affect their reactions to people who dont follow the majority.

Try telling a raver that you're into black metal, and they'll ask "Why do you listen to that depressing stuff? You should take an E and go out and dance!". Happyness is not the epitome of emotion. People forget that in their quest for superficial entertainment.

In general, I'm reasonably shy, unless it's around people I know. Around them, I am loud, clumsy and a bit of a clown. However, I have always had a darker side to my personality: I am a brooder, a thinker, and on emotional extremes.

I am the same way.

I can't explain why the "dark" side of life is fascinating to me, I love deep dark music and I love to read dark literature. My dad said even when I was a kid I had a "dark" side, so I guess I just got into metal because it fit my personality.

I do agree with whoever said it, Opeth isn't that dark.

And this is the best thread I've seen in this forum in a LONG time...

Dare I say it, but this kind of topic is very central to my life in general, and it's not an easy thing to express to people who are not open to it (ie, approx 99% of people out there). I actually find it really hard to express it to people I know, I don't like to talk to them about it too much because they simply cannot interpret it.

A friend once said to me "What is this... obsession with 'death' and blackness you have? What the hell is that?"

I honestly don't know, but I do know that investigation of that darker side of life seems to have captured more beautiful moments, because they stand out in a plethora of blackness... Does this make sense?

It's almost as though the obsession with blackness makes one appreciate the positive things even more, it really makes you realise what things are important in one's life. The simple things, the abstract things which people take for granted.

It makes me sick to see you all having a good life :yuk: :D

Mine sucks...so I listen to "dark" music because "light" and happy music makes me angry. Can't stand that "Everybody is happy" shit...

I'M NOT

Maybe be pro-active in making your life better? get a job, or get a better job if you have one. shave, and go to a party or club, and get a girlfriend...or get a new girlfriend if you already have one, etc.

sitting in a dark room listening to angry music all day never helped anybody, its no wonder youre angry.

But nobody deserves to feel like that, so do what you can to turn things around.

No, don't get a girlfriend, get a bunch of good friends instead.

Good friends dont help with sexual repression...which i think he is most likely suffering from.

But yes, good friends are also good for raising self esteem.

I realy dont think it matters much. Sure, friends are helpfull, and I personaly dont know where I'd be without them, but girlfriends can cause more problems than fix, unless you're pretty lucky.

The idea of this thread is for people to explain why they choose the solace of darkness over the stress of society and its expectations.

I used to think I was lucky like that. Now I just don't know anymore... Probably just me being paranoid. Look at me keeping the thread on topic :|

Yes they are, but it has to start with YOU. Friends can help alright, don't get me wrong, but they cannot help unless the person (who has whatever the problem is) takes the first step.

Stick to the topic people! - ShroudOfDusk is right

i actually did a project on this....it is in our nature to be attracted to evil....when you turn on the T.V., do you want to hear about a great achievement in science...or is it more interesting to hear about a terrorist bombing?

watch BOWLING FOR COLUMBINE... if you haven't already...that sort of touches on a topic similiar to this...

you're not right, an important part of commercial music isn't happy it's about their boyfriend dumping them or their relationship not workin out and it's dark and rainy outside, anastacia is drivin in her car and she pours her soul out boohoohoo

also, many of you explained why "dark" isn't necessarily "bad", as in the way society understands it, but that doesn't make it good.

in my opinion it's largely a matter of taste.
