The Best of 2001

Best album - No World Order (Gamma Ray)

Best song - I'm going to go with Return To Hangar (Megadeth). First heard it on Three Hours Of Power at a cracking volume while at work one Tuesday night, and loved it from the start....

Best band (that actually did something in 2001!) - still Gamma Ray. God Damn those boys need to tour Down Under...

Best gig - Megadeth at the Enmore, by a nose from Slayer at the Hordern.

Biggest (pleasant) surprise in music - Megadeth touring again after ten years. Just when you thought they'd never come back, they do, and were ridiculously awesome. My neck hurt for weeks!

Best movie - Rock Star. Mark Wahlberg continues to surprise me. Loved the soundtrack too!

Best non-metal, top 40-style song - Bob The Builder. Bring It On!!

Most newsworthy moment in metal - Though most have been covered by others already, I would add Eddie Van Halen's fight against cancer.

Most newsworthy moment in world news, not including September 11 or related news items - Somehow, the Evil Dwarf got voted in for a third term as Prime Minister! Something's going on there that no one is talking about....

Best album – Opeth – Blackwater Park
Best song – I guess for now I’ll say Wolf by IE
Best band (that actually did something in 2001!) - Megadeth
Best gig – Megadeth and Alice Cooper, closely followed by the awesome Slayer
Biggest (pleasant) surprise in music – Dungeon at the Espy…woah!
Best movie – Buggers me, though I’ve not seen LotR yet
Best non-metal, top 40-style song – I thought of one the other day, but then I forgot. I don’t know that I’ve liked a top 40 song since You’re The Voice by Farnsey.
Most newsworthy moment in metal – Chuck R.I.P.
Most newsworth moment in world news, not including September 11 or related news items – Jozxyqk got his willy wet

2001 was by far the best year for metal in my time. Fucking awesome! So many tours….Alice, Megadeth, Slayer, Cradle of Filth (fecking rocked the Palace), Purple (missed them cos I’d just got back to Australia and had no money), Devin Townsend etc etc. I was just so happy to see Alice and Megadeth in particular.

No World Order is pretty damn cool, plus there are rumours about that they may be coming here before long..
Return To Hanger is great, it's a shame the majority of the album doesn't come close to the this.
The Megadeth concert was SOOOO F'KING GOOD! :headbang:
Rock Star movie was good lighthearted fun. Soundtrack f'king rocks. :hotjump:

Same with me! 2 unbelievable shows, and for entirely different reasons. :hotjump:

(I hope this post makes sense..)

I've changed my mind about best album of 2001:

WASP - Unholy Terror

Phwoar :))) Shits on Horror Show.... best WASP album since The Crimson Idol... how good is the drumming??? :)

I LOVE BLACKIE!!!!!! What a voice!

Joe Salami: Well Dirk from Gamma Ray came down here this year and I saw him play a song with Eyefear :) Perhaps he will convince the rest of the band to trek down here after seeing what a good metal scene Melbourne has :D

Unholy Terror... hmmm..
Well it's the best out of the last 4 W,A,S,P releases, but that isn't saying much.
(Last 4 releases are.. Unholy Terror, The Sting, Best Of, Helldorado).
I don't think I'd rate it above KFD or Still Not Black Enough.

My main problem with it is the production. Yuck. Which is really wierd because Blackie has produced all the W,A,S,P albums since th first one and was able to a great sound on most of them.
Last Command / Electic Circus - perfect Glam vibe
Headless Children - great heavy metal.
Crimson Idol - Fucking epic.

Unholy Terror has some really great songs, like Locomotive-man, Charisma, Raven Heart, and Stet Howland and Frankie Banali both do some great drumming but the production is all over the place.
(np, Blackie does mention this in his linear notes)

Wow I like the production!!!

And I think KFD is a piece of shit... the only bad thing WASP has every released hehe. Haven't heard Still Not Black Enough though.... and Hellorado rocks!

My fave WASP album will always be the first though.... the #1 most nasty, attitude soaked, ultra-cool heavy metal album ever :)

And The Crimson Idol is just a masterpiece :) Same with The Headless Children hehe.

But Unholy Terror is fantastic I think! The production rocks.... drums and guitars especially sound awesome. And yhe songs... Let It Roar, Raven Heart, Who Slayed Baby Jane... its brilliant! hehe

Well you've sold me Troops! :D
I'm going to give Unholy Terror another listen, my first in a few months.

Still Not Black Enough is sort of a continuation of Crimson Idol, although it did take me a while to get into it. For a while I thought 'Scared To Death' was one of the worst WASP songs recorded and now it's my favourite from the album.

Try and find the song Skinwalker. It's only on the American release of the album and is unreal. A very different sounding WASP song, but great all the same.

Best album - Tool / Lateralus
Best song - Damaged / Sevendust
Best band (that actually did something in 2001!) - Fear Factory
Best gig - Pantera/Slayer/Static X in Vancouver
Biggest (pleasant) surprise in music - The Cult Beyond Good and Evil rocked!!!
Best movie - Fellowship of the Ring
Best non-metal, top 40-style song - ??? ummm no idea!

Best gigs of the year
1. AC/DC-1st Sydney show (first time hearing the new songs live)
