The britpop thread

I think Britpop represents everything I don't like in music. Theres something so dreary about it, nothing really "British" about it either, its a quintessentially English thing.

To sum it up I think the voices are bland, the music is bland and the outlook is bland. Should stay back in the nineties.

britpop got a whole generation of people into playing instruments, making "bands" cool again. had a great attitude to it, dominated the charts, distinctive sound/character etc. fair enough saying its an english thing though.

and fair enough not everyone will like it. such is music :)

Yeah, well you're right, I wouldn't mistake it for anything else, it does have distinct character I won't deny it.

As for the making bands cool again, I dunno about that, bands have always been cool to one degree or another.

and regarding oasis, anyone around about my age will know so many of their songs whether they want to or not as they are just that big.

they are like the only band that me and ALL of my friends all know the words to that we have grown up with (unfortunately mr brightside also has that claim, as does some kings of leon shite).

The two things I remember about Oasis are that an annoying guy I knew loved them and that Noel Gallagher always had the look of a pissed off Shar Pei. That said, I remember in the mid to late 90's when MTV and Britpop were butt buddies

I SAID MAAAAAAAAAAYBEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
YOUR GONNA BE THE ONE THAT SAAAAAAAAAAVES MEEEEEEEHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
AND AAAAAAFTERRRR AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLL
YOURE MY WONDERRRRR WAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHLLLLLLLLLLLLLL

one of the first songs i ever learnt on guitar \m/

im always curious to know how "well" oasis did in america as the perception here is that they never did anything/made an impact.

probably true, but I've heard a few people over there who have heard of them which surprised me a little.

If I can recall, I think they were pretty popular here during their peak. As were Blur and Bush and all those guys. Again, I think MTV helped with that. Of course I hated them at the time was more into listening to Megadeth's "Youthanasia" and The Crow soundtrack  Both on CD! I believe I had upgrade from cassettes to CD in mid '94  Oh, the good ol' days.

Yeah, Oasis did alright here I'd say, though they were big before I really got into any music besides film soundtracks, so I guess I missed the boat on them :D

Funny you mention that, because at the time they were big, I was also into movie scores. Let me dazzle you with the mighty selections cira '94/'95. "The Crow" score (yeah, I had a thing for that movie), "Mary Shelley's Frankenstein", and "True Lies"
