The Curse of '88!

I was thinking about this some time ago. Many bands put out some of their weakest albums, or turned a creative corner into sh*t street, around '86-89.

Kiss put out Crazy Nights. I thought Unmasked was iffy but, no, less to like about this and the stage show was pared right down. As a big Kiss fan, I was so p*ssed off.

Priest put out "Turbo". If there was a priest album I can live without, it's this one.

Iron Maiden - Seventh Son. Oops - the first Maiden album I didn't buy.

Whitesnake - became Sh*tesnake. Oh dear - the L.A. Hairdressers went out masquerading as a band I'd respected.

Deep Purple - House of Blue Light - 2 good tracks on it (Call of the Wild and Spanish Archer).

Anyone else notice this trend? Mind you, I was 16-18 and in need of Mighty Testosterone Metal at the time.

I really liked Turbo and Ram it Down, especially so because of all the live material that followed, some of the turbo and ram it down bootlegs are simply phenomenal...The setlists to both tours were pretty amazing as well.

Priest playing Victim of Changes on the turbo set is stunning..Every scream note perfect! Insane!!!

Also Seventh son by Iron Maiden is my overall favourite album by them....Aside from the first album

I wont mention the 1988 Saxon album that begins with 'D' because i know Wilks gets upset...but i quite liked it on the whole..

Another thing i liked about this era, was bands putting on big productions with their stage shows and pyro etc.

Well i thought Whitesnake were at there best in the late 80's cos they stopped making blues rock and started making more metalic albums (love the intro to bad boys).

Manowar were 'kings of metal'.

Helloween made the keeper of the seven keys albums.

And i liked the way bands put on more of a show, and people wore all those over the top stage clothes

I.E. they seemed to have much more fun than nowadays (even though, looking back, it does seem a bit cheesy)

Metallica,Anthrax,Slayer,Megadeth,Metal Church,Sacred Reich,Onslaught,Overkill all did great if not there best albums.But Saxon,Maiden,Kiss,Priest and the old school went shit.
Me i was off me tits listening to Stone Roses,Primal Scream,Happy Mondays because i was bored with all me old faves making shit albums.

Yeah Bounded By Blood is one the best albums of that genre.I saw Testament with Anthrax about this time as well what great gig that was.Nuclear Assult made a good racket as well.

Good points, folks. I remember that, at the time, I felt so let down by most of my old fave acts, as I mentioned, but as you rightly say there was a hell of a lot of great stuff too (Manowar, Anthrax, Onslaught, Sabbat etc).

Great mosh pits, too (Slayer, Reign in Pain tour etc).

I saw Testament supporting Anthrax as well, they were truly awesome ! What a double bill.

I also echo the sentiments re. tours back then, over the top and value for money.

Yep, Testament and Anthrax was a good night out. So was Thrash of the Titans (Suicidal Tendencies, Testament, Megadeth and Slayer). Never before have so many seat covers taken to the air at the NEC!

Mmh, yeah.. Priest released Ram it Down in 88 actually, which is, btw, pretty good album after all. I'm A Rocker is one of my favourite songs and there are some other great songs there as well. Keeper of the Seven Keys II is not bad either, IMO it's one of the best power metal albums (though it's easy decision for me because I dislike that genre). Mmh... Kings of Metal from Manowar was nice too, though not as good as any of their previous albums (except Manowar). Yeah well, maybe late 80's were hard for those old heavy metal bands, but I don't think it late 80's were that bad really... Black Sabbath - Headless Cross 1989!! Think about that!

I doubt it!! I like Bon Jovi, but I most definitely do NOT like Robbie Williams. Several of my workmates like Robbie, but do not like Bon Jovi! Bon Jovi are maybe what you'd describe as "pop rock" - but they hardly attract the same crowd as Robbie Williams! Oh, for the record, I am indeed a chick - so that must be ok for me to like Bon Jovi then, eh? Each to his/her own, I say! I personally have a VERY broad taste in music (as Paxoman will testify! lol), that is not limited to "Metal", and does include the odd Robbie tune - but I am by no means a fan.

A classic Maiden album & the natural progression from CSIT. The only thing they did wrong was to start playing the sheds in the UK.
Certainly after SSOASS the albums DID go downhill though ;-)
