the Danish language

Got this from my language dept friends. I used to wonder if the danes even understood themselves. Every time they'd come on the PA on the ferry from Kopenham and try to speak swedish my head would go into WTF mode.

all I know is a very good Danish friend of my told me that in her opinion swedish sounded like the way danish children talk

I would almost have to agree just in the sense that it took me 2 weeks to learn a handful of useful and even funny expressions / questions / etc .. in swedish with good pronunciation (so I was told)

took me 2 weeks to learn like 4 words in Danish

all I remember is monkey = abe

Finnish was always the one that made my head hurt. Danish I could piece together from watching the news and reading the subtitles. But Finnish completely broke my frame of reference. We'd play teams from there every year at Goteburg and they'd mix swedish and finnish in conversation. Broke my language skills.

at least Danish, Swedish, etc are all germanic in roots

maybe but I kinda doubt it. Thats based off a conversation I had with my buddy who's Finnish ... we were talking about the language and his words were "They say Hungarian or Estonian is supposed to be related but if it is, I haven't really heard it yet"

In Finland we have similiar sketch on one of the most famous finnish comedy (Kummeli), a nature program called Skiigge böy who talks gibberish that sounds a bit like the other scandinavian languages than finnish.

Trust me, you wouldnt. Hungarian is my main language but not one Finnish word is even remotely similar to hungarian. When my finnish colleagues are chatting I always think to myself bugger me!

Yah, we can't understand each other (Hungarians and Finns) but the roots of the language, deep down are the same.

Anyway, when we were on tour with Manticora in '08, we got our share of Danish language..
I can follow Swedish ok, but I just couldn't understand what they were talking! "Gluu glaa gloo.."

To be fair, they said that people from south of the country have trouble understanding people from the north.

Yeah, there's not much in common with finnish and hungarian, a few words might be the same but their meanings are completely different.

Estonian language though, I sometimes feel I almost understand by just being finnish. I probably speak perfect estonia when I'm shitfaced, for example.

Cmon, nobody understands Rauma-dialect, not even people from Rauma! Same with the Turku dialect, it sounds like gibberish.
