The Darker 80s: Dark Pop/Dream Pop/Post Punk

While I will respect your thoughts on his song-writing I will just say that it feels like a cheap second-rate attempt compared to other shoegaze/post-punk/dream-pop bands within the indie rock scene.

Since we are within the non-metal section now I will take the time to say everyone MUST check out Deerhunter-Microcastles. Seriously, this is amazing post-punk. Maybe the best recent post-punk album since Turn On The Bright Lights.

I never said it was as good as Loveless, Lush, Spooky, or Souvlaki, but to call it bad is ridiculous I feel, plus it isn't really going for the same thing as those bands in all reality.

I don't have a whole lot to add to this thread but I must say I'm a huge Depeche Mode fan.

Also:zombie:, just now I realized that NIN covered "Dead Souls" from Joy Division on The Crow soundtrack. I thought Trent wrote that song all this time.

I don't mind some of The Birthday Party/Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds stuff, although I hated them with a passion all through my most metal-loving period, so I don't think there is any correlation there. I've pretty much always loved darker music though, no matter what style.

newsflash: loveless is gay

Newsflash: you're gay. Even though this is terribly off-topic, Loveless is a fucking phenomenal album. I'm thrilled that you like Pornography so much, however: that was one of the defining records of my youth.

Regardless, some gothic/post-punk/what-have-you bands that I adore:

Bauhaus
Joy Division
Sisters of Mercy
Fields of the Goddamn Nephilim
Cocteau Twins
Swans (I don't really know if they qualify or not)
Southern Death Cult (NOT The Cult)
Christian Death
The Cure
The Mission
EDIT: Dead Can Dance, especially the debut
EDIT: Depeche Mode - Violator

I'm sure there are others, but beer clouds my memory.

Wouldn't matter to me, because they are one of the greatest musical entities ever!

Awesome thread! I like all the bands here. I just talked my band into covering 'Prozac People'. We also want to cover a Big Black song but we're undecided as to which one we want to cover.

Most of what I listened to before I discovered metal were bands from said genre in addition to stuff like skinny puppy and ministry. The Cure was my favorite band back then. I'm really quite surprised at the number of metal fans openly talking about how they enjoy these styles of music...awesome.

But that's the thing. Most metal fans are open minded, and more intelligent than we're given credit for. Tell a metal head that "you shouldn't listen to this music, it's not cool, not popular...nobody listens to that, only losers do." We're fucking going to! Even my favorite style of music, old 70's prog, has a lot of followers yes, but half tend to stay on their side of music. This type of music being discussed here influenced a lot of death/black, and doom bands we like.
