I only now realized what DoTA stands for. Thanks to Google.
Oh, right and your explanatory post, which I have missed somehow on first browsing.

It's a client where you can play DotA on with other people online. But it's played through lan or something like that.

They fucked up N'aix?! He was my favourite character

No idea what ToB refers to, except Throne of Bhaal, but that's not Warcraft-related in any way as far as I can tell.

Defence of the Ancients? WHAT? Pics plz. PLZ

Don't get to excited, it's just a stupid Warcraft 3 map, that somehow generated mass popularity.

ToB = Tides of Blood, another AoS style map that was popular for a while, but now only gets a few games every night. It requires a lot more strategy than DotA, and isn't about getting your hero uberwtf powerful to pwn everyone.

Actually, Naix became more powerful. Before he was a hero where you farm all game, and has one of the shittiest early games then late game you wtf pwn everyone. Now he's much team oriented (which is what DotA is) and is still very powerful. Now he is pretty much an anti-tank, and has a good early game, and late game he is good. Stealth Assassin is also a very weak hero, because he can be easily countered by wards, a gem or a Necro book(aka Necromonican). His invisibility is what makes him strong, but that can be countered like I said. Brewmaster is ok. And Puck just fucking pwns.

Yeah, I've heard about it, now that I think about it. I've heard good things about it, but I don't care enough about WC3 to try it now. I'm not a huge fan of DotA and I don't think it's the ultimate WarCraft 3 map, I just play it 'cause my friends do. It's not horrible but it's far more popular than it deserves to be. At least Northrend has more variety than the other servers, or it did when I still had my CD key at least.

The reason why DotA is so popular is because
1. It's probably one of the most balanced maps in Warcraft.
2. It's updated frequently, and when it's not, it will probably be a pretty big update.
3. Both Guinsoo(creator of the allstars version) and Icefrog (the one who maintains it right now and went through making the map better, and bringing it into the competitive scene) have put a lot of effort and time into the map.
4. The community helps make the map better also.

Also, DotA isn't about making your hero "uberwtf powerful". There should only be one person trying to farm per team. The rest of the team is full of support heroes, gankers, spell casters, etc.

Right probably my favorite pubstomping hero is Techies. It's epic watching the other team push, and killing them all with mines.
