The Guild Wars 2 Thread

I enjoyed GW1 a lot and I'm thinking of buying GW2.
I heard some people are already at lvl80 so should I be afraid of leveling up too fast?
I mean is the game short or is there enough content worth the money?

The guy you probably read about was powerleveling with help from his guild, left out lengthy quests, didn't do any boss fights / events / escorting missions etc. and he played during all the beta phases so they could set up a plan how to do it the fastest way. He also started three days early (pre-purchased). Crafting gives loads of XP, he did that alot (and his guild gave all the crafting materials to him otherwise he wouldn't be able to do it).
I played for 45 hours and was around lvl 32 I think, there are 80 lvls and since you played GW1 you know that the last lvl is not the end of the game - not at all. It start, basically  The world and especially the cities are huge, especially compared to GW1.

Also this isn't really unusual, people do it with most (every?) online game and most of them are "finished" within days. But again, being lvl 80 doesn't mean anything at all. You could still be in the first city and reach lvl 80 through crafting if you wanted. The level scaling also makes the game challenging no matter where you are and what level you have - your stats will be reduced to that of a lvl 15 guy for example if it's a lvl 1-15 area. So exploring the whole world including the starting regions of the other races isn't boring and you still get XP from events and quests, still die if you don't watch out etc.

Soooo, checked out some youtube like you guys were saying. Figure Imma g'head and grab this shit.

Norn Warrior
Human Thief. Them shit's gonna be happenin.

cool man. thanks for the thorough explanation. I think it might have sealed the deal:) cheers

Have you guys tried any "explorable" dungeons yet? (Or Heroic mode as people call them).

Freaking. Awesome.

The level of difficulty is WAY more higher than storyline dungeons, which makes it MUCH more interesting! Good luck trying to PUG them at first ;)

LVL 52 (80 hours I think hahaha yes I'm retarded)

Also created a human necro (lvl 10) and a Norn guardian (lvl 9). I'll probably make a Charr necro and a human or sylvari elementalist in the future. I wish the game had 6 character slots, because I also want to play a thief. *sigh*

crazy bastatd;)

as I mentioned, I bought the game but I'm relatively unexperienced with MMORPGS's, played wow in 05, 06 and GW I in 05 but not like hardcore.
but this game? it's so complex, took me one day to figure out what to do and how this game works. I even had to google how to get tools for collecting resources for crafting haha.
I picked a Sylvari hunter as my first character. pretty weird story about their race but now that I'm settled in a bit I think this game is awesome!

I really had a hard time choosing the right class/race. At the very beginning I chose a sylvari guardian, but I really disliked their starting area. Then I created loads of different characters. I even created many of the same class and race as I tried out before, since I already deleted them, because of the limited character space, but wanted to try them out again. It really took me ages, but in the end I went with a charr warrior. I like how the warrior can use so many different weapons. And heavy armor looks so badass on the charr!

I like that they didn't make it pay2win and all their other new innovations like the sidekicking, the personal story or the pvp. This MMO is actually fun unlike so many others, where you just grind the whole time. Some would say that the event system is still kind of grindy, but I am enjoying it very much.

And the bosses look fucking awesome! They're so big and well designed!
ArenaNet is really a great company. Those of you who actually watched some interviews with them will know what I mean. They love what they do and care about the community. Too bad that the community itself doesn't give them the same back. Many people complain on their facebook page about the launch and all the bugs the game still has/had. I don't know what these people were expecting. There're always some problems after a launch of an online game and these problems didn't make the game less awesome imo!
I guess that it was some peoples own fault that they got errors (at least some of them), hacked or banned.

I'm lvl 25 at the moment. I don't play that much, since I got like no time at the moment, but when I'm playing I'm really enjoying it!

Edit: Oh, and my server is Kodash! But I am spending most of my time on the overflow server... It's quite nice there :)

FML, think I might buy it... Though I'll probably buy after I get Borderlands 2 and beat it, cause I don't want to have to choose between the two LOL!

Got this last week. I keep starting again, can't choose a class. Highest is a 16 Norn Ranger. I'm not totally sold on it, but we'll see. Combat is a lot less mobile than WoW (the only other MMO I've played), and I'm still struggling to understand how all the skill unlocks work usefully - you unlock the 'best', or your favourite skill on a tier, then you have to unlock 4 more skills that you'll never use to unlock the next tier. Seems weird.

what does overflow server actually mean? I get this message quite often but the world seems normal to me?

Means your server is full for that area, so you get put in an 'overflow' server until a spot frees up in your server, then you can transfer back in.

Less mobile? Whaaaat? Surely the fact you have to dodge a lot of attacks and actually aim your spells and shit would make the combat more mobile? In WoW, all I ever did whilst questing was sit in the same place and spam my spell rotation

You move a LOT slower when you start attacking, which makes kiting a lot harder/impossible in some situations. As an ex-Hunter from WoW kiting was half the fun, either you stayed away from your opponent and killed him without him touching you, or he touched you and you got slaughtered instantly.

Loads of melee attacks lock you in melee range, if you go out of melee range you'll jump back in so you can make your attack. It doesn't work so well when you have half a second of ping and you're trying to be mobile, you kinda just have to stand in one spot. But this doesn't always work - a few spells that try to reposition my character (my Ranger has one with a sword, where he 'evades' and then repositions to side of the enemy), reposition me OUTSIDE melee range, deactivate autoattack and leave me standing there like a retard.

Ah right yeah, fair enough. Played a hunter in WoW as well so I see what you mean about the kiting :p

Hm, I rarely ever get hit by enemies as a ranger. With the pet attacking, then crippling the enemy and hitting them with conditions like bleeding, poisoning, probably chilling traps, then running around them (you can cast skills and attack during moving which was different in GW1 where spells/skills interrupted as soon as you were moving) in circles if even necessary does the deal for me. If you choose a snow pet (polar bear or wolf, or the strange crossing between wolf&bear (Arctoros or something) with an attack that chills enemies I can't see how they can get close enough to you to do any dmg - at least if you play the longbow/shortbow combo.
The longbow also has the awesome attack that pushes enemies away from you so they have to start their slow journey towards you again
But come to think of it, now that I also play a guardian I see how the dodging a lot more difficult with melee characters, but it'll work better with more experience I think  For the guardian it's actually not that important because of the heavy armor and protecting spells. Why are you playing the ranger as a melee class anyway? Bows ftw ;)

Concerning the "useless skills": I can't remember if you played the original GuildWars, but at the end you had like 200 skills and depending on the region, type of enemies and role of your character within a particular group you had to very carefully choose 8 skills out of those hundreds to play the most efficient and powerful role you could. It's certainly similar in GW2, while at the beginning it doesn't really matter, in the end-game dungeons and high level areas you have to be able to change your role from a support to trapping ranger to pet ranger, etc. depending on the situation. While you probably don't need ALL skills of every tier it's highly likely you'll need at least 4-6 skills of every tier sometime. Other than most MMOs it's about choosing wisely before you start a fight and not creating the uber-char with 2000 different spells at the same time. I think it's a little sad there are relatively few skills now, and you can change them between fights.

I actually found out you can turn off the 'lock into melee range' in the options, so that's good. I get all the points you make. I guess I just miss the playstyle of the WoW hunter, I've never played anything like it in another game, ever (and even if I returned to WoW now, they've removed a lot of the aspects I liked). The whole concept of the deadzone where you were totally fucking useless, kiting but having to stop to attack, having a pet that's actually useful - it's totally different to how the GW Ranger plays. I guess I'm just nostalgic ;p

GUESS WHAT I BOUGHT?!

The install takes like a fucking year... but anyways... IMMA FUCK YOU GUYS UP NOW!

Unless you wanna team up then that's fine too.
