By _layered_ I am talking about infinitely textured releases, with layer placed upon layer. Artists that immediately come to mind are Radiohead, Porcupine Tree, Devin Townsend, later Ulver, Björk, etc.

I always considered OK Computer a very hugh pioneer in the 90's, but when Devin Townsend released Terria in 2001, I felt he'd taken it a step further. So intense and "thick" are the soundscapes on that disc, the music is among the most rewarding ever. You get to discover new stuff even after hundreds of listens. Not only do I consider a masterpiece, but its production also blows me away.

Even though many other releases have come out since Terria, it wasn't until I heard Ulver's much overlooked Blood Inside that I heard another disc whose production and complex mixing impressed me so much.

I guess you get what I'm talking about. What are some of the most layered albums you have heard? Feel free to write a line or two of comments as well.

Cheers!

All Darkthrone albums are quite amazing a this !
Darkthrone? Obviously your understanding of "layered" albums is quite different from mine. To me, the production of Darkthrone is among the most direct and straightforward ever.

Another example; Opeth's Morningrise is not a very textured album, boasting little overdubbing, while Blackwater Park is almost a shift of paradigm compared to their previous albums. That said, it doesn't come close to the greatness of Terria or Blood Inside, IMO.

ORLY? :Smug:

Beethoven was the original madman layerer, sh*t just swooping in and out.

Grandaddy - Sophtware Slump - kind of Floydish indie rock, very nice and smooth.

El-p - hip hop producer that made Fantastic Damage, Cannibal Ox, jagged and rough, but deep as hell.

I hope no ones said it already but trust me Captain Beefheart will beat anyone of these examples into a bloody submission and rape it's lifeless corpse.

Beefheart are fucked up, their music is shit but it defiently qualifies as the lead in the little competition.

Captain beefheart is a horrible, shit band and i will never understand why so many people like them, my salad burguer farts are more musical than that shit...

Blut Aus Nord. The more industrial tracks usually have various layers of synth, samples and whatnot. There's usually dissonant guitar harmonies, as well as the standard kit.

Nightwish's 'Once' is pretty layered. It's common to hear synth, guitars, drums, bass, harmonized vocals and orchestration at the same time. As said though, layers don't necessarily equate to quality.

I just bought Diabolical Masquarade "Death's Design", I like the layering on this album.
