The News Thread

Sure, but is this the first time a 30+ year old rape threat was dredged up, leaked to the media against all wishes of the accuser to have it kept private, and then have the accused dragged to a hearing wherein he's basically pressured to suspend his nomination and urge the FBI for an investigation to be brought against himself, all in the period of a month?

Seems pretty unprecedented but I'm not exactly well read on the obscure fuckeries of American politics so maybe it's common.

Ummm...

This, although it was more like a 10-20 year old allegation that Thomas made a joke about a pubic hair on a can of soda and another joke about a porn star's dick.

Also, Clinton had some rape allegations going back 20 years as well.

I mustn't have been listening close enough to the Kavanaugh/Ford hearing. He's not being accused of raping her, he's being accused of pushing her into a bedroom, sitting on top of her and laughing as she thought he was going to rape her?

So not even an actual rape, a rape attempt at best? Now she's up 800k via GoFundMe, a comp'd lawyer team and apparently comp'd lie detector test?

She says that if he hadn't had so much to drink, he would have raped her. He was holding her down and trying to take her clothes off. It was an attempted rape.

My default is to accept the accusations for what they are: accusations with considerable backing and substantive evidence. Pending any full investigation into the allegations (which of course, may lead to criminal charges), I think it makes the most sense to find another candidate.

You noted the imbalance of power, and the problem with letting each party "make their case" is that ultimately it comes down to belief. In a full criminal investigation, the process would be a lot more detailed. In a criminal court, reasonable doubt keeps someone out of prison (ideally). In this case, however, reasonable doubt doesn't hold the same sway. We're not talking about denying someone their personal liberty, we're talking about awarding someone a high degree of judicial responsibility.

I'm not denying that people make false accusations. I'm denying the frequency with which it happens, and the facility with which someone might do it.

tbh if Feinstein is already under pressure because Ford's name was leaked through her office, more names being leaked could automatically make her look worse no matter whose name. But anything that makes more people hate Feinstein is good in my book.
