The Official "How was the Hellish Rock Show" at ProgPower 9?

Loved Gamma Ray. Helloween's sound was not better for being raw but the performance more than made up for it. Looking forward to the Calgary gig!

It was great

God Center Stage is WAY smaller than I thought....the floor is like 15 rows then it's all seats. So basically if you show up late you're screwed and you have to sit. Still a nice venue though.

Manticora was great....had the best sound of any concert I have ever been to. You could clearly hear the Keyboards and Guitar solos. I just didn't know most of the stuff they played because they played a lot of old stuff and I only have their 2 newest albums

Gamma Ray was good. I'm not very familiar with their stuff but they were funny and put on a good show

Helloween was awesome...a pit broke out. For Helloween. Yeah it was weird lol. Halloween, Future World, Paint a New World and basically everything was good. My dad liked em too.

I drove 8 hrs Thursday just to see this show (and 8 hrs back on Friday!), and I have to say that it was more than worth it! I really like Gamma Ray ALOT, and their performance was spot on. Their setlist was cool, but man, I would have loved to have heard "Space Eater"!
Helloween is easily one of my all-time favorite metal bands....one who I never thought I'd see live, so this was a pretty big deal for me. Needless to say, I left the venue extremely happy. I was actually very impressed at how Deris performed the Kiske classics, and the more I heard, the more I kept thinking that Andi is a kick-ass singer! I really liked their setlist, but like someone else said, they did tend to play a little too many songs from Keepers 1+2. I would have LOVED to have had heard more stuff from Time Of The Oath, Rabbit Don't Come Easy, Better Than Raw or even Keepers 3; I guess that they have just too much incredible material!
All in all, I want to thank Glenn for putting on this show. He made this aging metal-head a very happy man!:headbang:

i wasn't really familiar with the two opening acts going into this show. gamaray was an extremely pleasant suprise! i felt like i already knew several of their songs, extremely catchy, and a truely charismatic performance by the band.

helloween has a great stage presence, but i was pretty dissapointed with a lot of their set-list. opening their set with the 20-minute sleeper-self-titled track instead of one of their many incredible anthems was a really bad move, imo: lost a lot of their audience right off the bat. they had a lot of good stuff mixed into the set, but there were too many slow tracks and it felt like they took to long getting to them.

the encore with gama ray back on stage was loads of fun, and one of the most memorable moments i've ever seen in a concert. worth the price of the ticket for just those two songs!

I felt like I was a kid again during the show. Seeing the people around me going just as crazy as me during Heaven Can Wait and hearing voices around me during every single song, man this is how concerts should be! Fists in the air, godly classics, rabid fans. I blew my energy load bad during Gamma Rays set and had to perch to watch Helloween. It was just as awesome as Gamma Ray's. Hearing March of fucking Time. I heard that song live. I never in my wildest dreams thought that Helloween would ever play that song live, it's been twenty years since they have I think. And when everyone was onstage for the encore it just turned into one big damn party. Pumpkin balloons (or were they beach balls?) included.

It was fantastic! So great in fact I booked myself a flight n caught the Chicago show last night as well. It was incredible as well.

Gamma Ray absolutely tore the place apart both nights, as did Helloween.

Awesome stuff :D

I liked Manticora a lot, but the vocals seemed a little off key due to the fact that he was sick, but it's all good.
Gamma Ray owned....that is all.
Helloween....I've said it before....
I drifted from this band after the Kiske era and I've gotten some shit for it but it's my own opinion.
Deris can't do Kiske tunes...he doesn't have the range and it kind of ruined it for me but it was good to hear the classics nonetheless. Either way, I learned some new German words so thanks to Deris for the lesson. ;)
Kai rules. It was awesome to see him play with them during the second encore. Couldn't ask for anything better other than taking a trip back in time to see the original lineup at their finest.

Deris' range is pretty darned close to Kiske.....he just has a different sound. Much harsher and grittier. I was quite surprised at how well he pulled off the Kiske stuff (well...to me at least!). Kick-ass show all around!
BTW- I'd be curious to hear Kiske attempt "Push" (Better Than Raw) or "Kill It" (Gambling With The Devil). I don't think it would be nearly as ferocious as what Deris does.

Hey....I was right behind you the whole show....I was the handsome devil asking about Elvenking and Iron Savior. Small world. It was a great show but the Pearl Room really needs to get thier act together with the tech / sound issues there. They have ruined about 6 shows now with these problems. I wish Helloween and Gamma Ray came to the states more often. it is always a great time.

I liked Gamma Ray a lot better, but it was great to finally see Helloween as I missed the boat on them years ago (like Savatage), and can now say I've seen the "legendary" Helloween. Not to diss them at all, but Helloween seemed somewhat disinterested most of the night. Deris is kind of a clown....and I am (was) a big fan of his from the early PC 69 days....disappointed. It was all worth it to have them all come out at the end for the last two songs....that's classic! Oh, and the Manticora guys can bring it, too.

This was a heckuva show. Saw Manticora a couple of fests ago - too bad about the other guitar not being present, and that Lars was feeling a bit ill. They still brought it though.

Gamma Ray - OMG - Kai kicked ass and took names. Absolutely owned. Had never seen them live before - have a few of the albums - but they usually don't stick too long in the cd player - have a new appreciation for them now. Damn, Hansen is a Rock Star. The guy can play, sing, is charismatic with the audience.

Helloween - it was going to be tough following the energy of GR but Helloween did a pretty good job of it. I still preferred GRs tunes - but with Helloween you do get some almighty classics. Would have loved to get a pumpkin beach ball - that's a good souvenir from a metal show :) Jam at the end was great.

Great strong bill to kick off the fest - Shane is going to have to work his ass off for next year's showcase to top this. Fortunately, he already has been :) Dammit - I forgot to go back and pick up a GR shirt - oh well, Exploding Ned's will be seeing me soon enough (maybe a couple of paydays to recover).

Being a fan of Helloween for 22 years, I loved hearing Kai Hanson singing RIDE THE SKY my absolute favorite Helloween song ever. Knowing full well they were not going to sing it, and the fact Kai sang the damn song originally, I was more than happy for Gamma Ray to play it. Then at the end for both bands to sing my 2nd favorite Helloween song I Want Out was just awesome...THank you GLenn was making my impossible dream come true!!!!!

Oh hey!! Cool! Small world :)

It was SO worth it!!!

The Rays are fantastic, I just hope next time THEY are headlining. They have worked so hard and deserve it, and deserve a lot more recognition in America. Dammit.

haha. They're such nice guys too, it was great to get to meet em and get some stuff signed :)

I think that helloween and gamma ray should have switched places that night. Gamma Ray had a hell of a lot more energy than Helloween did and they were working the crowd more. Although they kind of made up for it when they all played on stage together. I would love to see that tour again!!!
