The Official "How was the Hellish Rock Show" at ProgPower 9?

I thought Helloween did a freakin' amazing job... although the pictures that I took of the singer made him look like he was 80 years old but w/e.
I really really wish that Gamma Ray played some more stuff off of Majesty... doesn't anyone else thing that was an amazing Gamma Ray album or is it only me? That one is my favourite by far and they only played one song from it! :(

I have been looking forward to that show for a very very long time!

To be honest, Thursday night was my favorite evening of metal for the entire weekend. The GammaWeen encore at the end was amazing! Definitely one of my Top 10 shows of all time!

I was actually not that big into that album - I actually think it's TOO heavy for my power-metal taste. But, that one song sounded damned great live .. so much that I actually spun the whole disc afterwards and am now loving it :) [I actually got this same effect from seeing Blind Guardian doing songs from Night At The Opera live .. hated the disc before .. but now I understand it more after hearing it stripped down to their "Somewhere Far Beyond" live-sound]

I just wish they had played all of Ride the Sky .. but the suprise question to the audience and jumping into it more than made up for that. My jaw was literally dropped and I felt like a 3 year-old seeing Barney for the first time :loco:

Poor Andi

I think you mean Majestic. "Majesty" is a song ;)

And I agree with you about the album being amazing. It's my favorite of theirs by far. Though they played more tracks from it on the last tour :)

Well, how many bottles of red wine did he down before the Atlanta show?
He certainly had one (or two or three or four) before the Chicago show!!!

Didn't seem to impact his vocal performance, so I had no issue with it.

I was afraid he was going to hurl between songs though.
I never saw a face THAT red!

Deris' range is pretty darned close to Kiske.....he just has a different sound. Much harsher and grittier. I was quite surprised at how well he pulled off the Kiske stuff (well...to me at least!). Kick-ass show all around!
BTW- I'd be curious to hear Kiske attempt "Push" (Better Than Raw) or "Kill It" (Gambling With The Devil). I don't think it would be nearly as ferocious as what Deris does.

No way, Ask yourself why so many bands want Kiske to be on there projects as special guest (Ex. Aina, Avantasia etc.). Andi Deris is a second grade singer, I'm not saying he is a bad singer, he has his own stuff and on Helloween records like Master of the Rings he shows his stuff, but he is just not on the league of Kiske, Roy Khan, David Friedman and Ed Hovinga. Kiske does not need to be ferocious, his high notes do the talking and BTW I'm not a Kiske fan anymore because of his stuped attitude towards metal bands lately, I'm just being realistic.

Don't forget David Friedman sounds much better doing Deris PC69 songs. Is like comparing a Lancer Evo X to a lame Ford Mustang on corners.

Do you mean David READMAN? :loco:
Yeah, Kiske is a legend because of two albums he did (everyone forgets about Pink Bubbles Go Ape and Chameleon), and he is a fantastic singer. But, in his own rights, so is Deris. Like I said before, Deris just has a different sound than Kiske, and for what he does, he's pretty damned good. It's a matter of taste as to whether you dig him or not. Kiske can't do the screams that Deris does (neither can Khan or Readman).....that doesn't make Deris better or worse, just different. What the hell.....none of them can touch Russell Allens' versatility........so there!

Yeah that was definitely worth it. I would have loved to hear more songs from Majestic too, such a great cd!

I think you were over on my side in the front kind of. I was right in front of the crazy Mexican dudes with the Helloween flag

Hahhaha, poor Andi, ahhwell, I got some pretty decent pics of him in Chicago, for a crapped out cell phone camera that needs a good lashing.

I think that helloween and gamma ray should have switched places that night. Gamma Ray had a hell of a lot more energy than Helloween did and they were working the crowd more.

I believe Gamma Ray had the best fan reaction all weekend in terms of number of people in the venue and the amount of fist pumping. They are great entertainers and play a lot of "happy metal" that isn't dark and brooding but rather lighthearted. More of Helloween's music is on a deeper intellectual/emotional level than Gamma Ray's that doesn't automatically trigger fist-pumping. Being in that treasured second-from-last spot probably also helped Gamma Ray with the amount of people in the venue and energy. Although Gamma Ray isn't a band I care to listen to on disc, I have enjoyed watching them live. They definitely have a devoted following at ProgPower USA.

I really liked Helloween's set. Andi is a fantastic showman. I can't believe he kept that big leather jacket on as long as he did.

I just wish one of them would have played, "Heavy Metal Hamsters."

Great lighting for both bands provided by the Hellish Rock tour lighting engineer.

That will never happen. Current Helloween pretends that the Pink Bubbles Go Ape & Chameleon albums never existed so no songs from either of them in the setlists. It's a shame because there are some really good songs on them.

The "Deris era" Helloween did play The Chance (Pink Bubbles) on the Time Of The Oath tour (the High Live disc), but that was when Grapow was in the band. We all know how well that break-up went.
I was listening to Chameleon the other day (before I attended the Hellish show!) and boy....there are some good tunes on that cd. "Giants", "I Believe" and "Longing" are some of my faves from that album. As good as those cds' were, I was happy with their return to form with the release of "Master Of The Rings". Just a great band all around!

Pretty much agreed here, on all points.

Yep, I was able to watch their LD working at the light board since I was sitting a bit above and to the right (stage-left) of the sound and light boards. First time I've been able to do that at Center Stage and it was a lot of fun to watch.

My old roommate has become a pretty good self-taught LD (or "L1", depending on the gig) and it's fascinating to watch a good lighting tech at work.
