If you were to put a metal compilation together - what would the 12 songs be, and in what order.

If there was a reason other than these 12 songs being your favorite, then tell why. [ie:represented a period of time, you compiled a "genre" CD, they were all love ballads, etc.]

Shit, only 12 songs? I can think of at least 30 right now. Even more actually, I would want at least 5 songs to represent each ganre of metal. But if you wanted to paint a full picture I guess you would have to take at least 2 songs from each album that each of the more "famous" bands has put out. So there would be at least (probably more) 10 songs by Opeth alone.

I physically and emotionally can't handle the stresses of tasks such as this one.

Well, I would have five compilation CD's. Each with the best metal in the world contained within, showing a diverse range of metal styles and influences from other genre's of music.

On the first CD, here are the songs that I would have.

1. In The Mist She Was Standing - Opeth
2. Under The Weeping Moon - Opeth
3. Sillouette - Opeth
4. Forest Of October - Opeth
5. The twilight is my robe - Opeth
6. Requiem - Opeth
7. The Apostle In Triumph - Opeth

Then on the second CD I would have:

1. Advent ...

... need I go on?

Okay, fine! I'll have the balls to step up to the plate for this one.

This is my poorly attemptedly semi-objective pseudo-chronological "hit all points stylewise possible, albeit with a slant towards the recent and taken from my own personal biases, minus a few exceptions (*cough*tallica)" list.

1. War Pigs - Black Sabbath
2. Angel of Death - Slayer
3. Master of Puppets - Metallica
4. Metropolis Pt. 1 - Dream Theater
5. Twilight - Edge of Sanity
6. Preludium/To Mega Therion - Therion
7. Advent - Opeth
8. The Loss and Curse of Reverence - Emperor
9. Artifacts of the Black Rain - In Flames
10. Dead Inside - Arch Enemy
11. The Kinslayer - Nightwish
12. The Enigmatic Spirit - Vintersorg

This is more of a "these are the different ways metal can sound, and an introduction to some of the best artists in metal" than "these are the 12 best metal songs ever" compilation. Otherwise it'd just be 1-9 MAYH, and Advent, BRI, and TBYF.

I felt I had to put Sabbath, Slayer, and Metallica on just to establish history, I think...

Hmmm. Some that come to my mind right now, without any further thought. And note, these are only MY personal favorites, no points for "old and important founders", whose songs are pretty dull when compared to today's masters. Only one song per band.

1. Dark Tranquillity - Punish My Heaven
2. The Black League - Sanguinary Blues
3. Opeth - Nectar (eat that BRI-lovers!)
4. Amorphis - Black Winter Day
5. The Sins of Thy Beloved - Lake of Sorrow
6. In Flames - Jotun
7. Sentenced - The Way I Wanna Go
8. Tiamat - Whatever that Hurts
9. The Kovenant - Jihad
10. Megadeth - Tornado of Souls
11. Edge of Sanity - Black Tears
12. Metallica - Call of Ktulu

Whoa, pretty many great bands/songs were left aside, but at least I got twelve MEGA-GREAT songs here. Next time, let it be a double-CD, won't you.

1. Iron Maiden - Powerslave
2. Black Sabbath - Children Of The Grave
3. Slayer - Raining Blood
4. Deep Purple - Highway Star
5. Metallica - Master Of Puppets
6. Entombed - Stranger Aeons
7. Pantera - Walk
8. Dream Theater - Scarred
9. Judas Priest - The Sentinel
10. Dissection - Night´s Blood
11. Manowar - Blood Of My Enemies
12. At The Gates - Blinded By Fear
13. Morbid Angel - Maze Of Torment
14. Ozzy Osbourne - Mr Crowley
15. Opeth - The Moor
16. Mayhem - Funeral Mist
17. Venom - Welcome To Hell
18. Bathory - One Rode To Asa Bay
19. Cannibal Corpse - Hammer Smashed Face
20. Mercyful Fate - Evil

8. Tiamat - Whatever that Hurts

I was just wondering how these guys were. I heard one song and my first thought is when I hear a band that I might possibly like is, "I wonder if all their music sounds like this." Ya know where I'm coming from? How many times have you bought an album because of one song you heard, and then got home, put it in, and was like...hm. They all sound like the first one. What a disappointment, IMO. I guess what I was wondering, is which songs would you recommend that I can check out that would help me decide this without buying an album. (besides the one listed above) As far as my list...

1. Opeth covering Celtic Frost – Circle of The Tyrants Heeheehee :heh:
2. Opeth – The Twilight Is My Robe
3. Amorphis – The Castaway
4.
5.
6. Katatonia - Brave
7. Katatonia - Murder
8. Katatonia - 12
9.
10. Opeth – In The Mist She Was Standing
11. Opeth - Benighted
12. Opeth - Epilogue

Um, forget it. It’s like those chips. I can’t just have one. I think if I was given a compellation or had the option to buy one with only one Opeth/Katatonia on it, then it’d be easier. I’d like a compellation of all instrumentals though. :) It’d have to include Bombay Vindaloo, every Opeth instrumental, Vintersorgs...etc.

" I had sulfur in my heart, but not enough strength to give it a spark."

Here is my Compilation

1- In Mist She Was Standing-Opeth
2- Hangar 18-Megadeth
3- Iron Man-Black Sabbath
4- Lovelorn Rhapsody-Anathema
5- Black Tears (I assume Crimson is not allowed)-Edge of Sanity
6- Ordinary World-In Flames
7- I don't mind the pain-Danzig
8- Murder-Katatonia
9- Hedon-Dark Tranquillity
10-The Return of the Beautiful-My Dying Bride
11-The Outlaw Torn-Metallica
12-Hallowed be thy name-Maiden

1) Start with Opeth to set the tone.
2) Go back in time to some heavy, fast Megadeth.
3) Dig back in time and come up with some darker stuff; where it all started from.
4) The mood is set for some gut wrenching riffs, and the sad lyrics (poem) that comes with it.
5) Ease up on the heaviness, while remaining on the same theme
6) Breath of fresh air
7) Some Danzig attitude
8) Back to some haunting/morbid music.
9) Some DT complexity.
10) Some sheer Bride brilliance.
11) This song is the best of the new Metallica; worth every minute
12) End on a high note, literally.

I'll give it a shot (no particular order):

1. God Dethroned - The Grand Grimoire
2. In Flames - Clayman
3. Opeth - (something off Morningrise...dont care...pick one)
4. Emperor - With Strength I Burn
5. Summoning - Like Some Snow-Marbled Eyes (I think that's the name....it's something stupid like that)
6. Solitude Aeturnus - Hallowed Be Thy Name (Iron Maiden cover)
7. Black Sabbath - Sabbath Bloody Sabbath
8. Vintersorg (again doesn't matter which)
9. Death - Crystal Mountain
10. Amorphis - Black Winter Day
11. Amon Amarth - Victorious March
12. Blind Guardian - Nightfall

Damn very biased...alot of extreme metal in there.

Oh yeah - my list:

Opeth - The Funeral Portrait
Grip Inc - Hostage to Heaven
Machine Head - Old
Mortal Sin - Blood, Death, Hatred
Meshuggah - Future Breed Machine
Nevermore - We Disentegrate
Old Mans Child - Demoniacal Possession
Destruction - The Final Curtain
Dimmu Borgir - Blessings Upon the Throne of Tyranny
Skin Lab - Dissolve
Mercyful Fate - Nightmare
Crisis - Deadfall

It takes me a while for current music to make my list, which is why there is a lot of older stuff on here

It's pretty hard to tell how does a typical Tiamat-song sound or anything, since they have changed a lot through the years and each album has some "weird" songs among more "standard" ones.

But some songs that I like from their latest albums are:

-The aforementioned "Whatever that Hurts" and "Gaia" from Wildhoney. The first one is a strong, almost "scary" song and the latter is a metal ballad with uncharasteristic guitars and non-ballad singing.

-"Cold Seed" from A Deeper Kind of Slumber, which is a fast song with one great riff. It's hard to describe, but listen to it yourself. I warn you, however, the rest of the album isn't at all like it.

-"Brighter than the Sun" from Skeleton Skeletron - a very "rock" song with little complexity but lots of attitude. The rest of the album is somewhat slower.

All in all, I consider Wildhoney their best album - it has some great songs and not too many "weird" ones, unlike A Deeper Kind of Slumber, which is full of strange sounds and eerie moments (good for background-music, but not something I'd like to listen often).

Hope that helps you!
