That comic uses racism and bigotry to make its point. Undermines it entirely if you ask me. As far as I'm concerned, the validity of its argument has already been made by Chomsky et al. I don't need a racially charged and immature comic strip to prove anything.

Why is racism the prism of judgement? I would agree that it doesn't "help". But that it indeed blinds is a problem. Secondly, those this comic reaches probably aren't well read on Chomsky. Okay, I know this is the pics thread, but this pisses me off so much.

People who say that the media is one-sided and presents the case as racial in favor of Trayvon entirely miss the racism inherent in this very view: the idea that Zimmerman had to have been defending himself against Trayvon.

The media paints this picture: Trayvon as the aggressor and Zimmerman as defending himself. The issue if whether or not he had to fire his weapon becomes the primary issue, but it isn't; and it precludes us from seeing an entirely different angle.

Maybe Trayvon was defending himself; but thanks to media portrayal of Trayvon as the aggressor, it becomes "Trayvon the violent black man who attacked Zimmerman", not "Trayvon the unarmed teenager who was defending himself against a stalker."

Right from the start it was Trayvon the innocent 12 year old boy and Zimmerman the angry police-assaulting asshole with a judge father. Trayvon had no detectable wounds and Zimmerman was seen on the bottom in the altercation by an eyewitness, and had multiple (albeit non-life threatening) wounds on his head/face.

But yeah, the comic above is clearly incredibly racist.

The truth is more complex and I think it's pretty obvious most media took Trayvon's side from the beginning and oversimplified the incident to make it into a white on black crime.

This is superficial. Even on CNN and MSNBC, the general image that emerges is of the threatening black and the defending white.

From the very beginning, the issue was whether or not Zimmerman acted in self-defense. No one ever stopped to consider whether or not Trayvon may have been defending himself.

I don't see that "general image emerging" on non-FOX outlets. The issue that was over self defense was the actual court case. Obviously had he not been, then it would have been the other way around. The reason it could not be tried that way was because Trayvon was dead. Had Trayvon killed Zimmerman we would have seen it the other way.

That there is any racism hysteria involved in this is entirely manufactured by the racebaiting machinery of the Sharptons/Jacksons/SPLC et al. I call it grasping at straws in this particular instance, given the facts about ZImmerman; both his ethnicity and his background. Nevermind the fact that the fucking prosecutor has been indicted for falsifying .....everything?

I know you think it's race-baiting, but this honestly has nothing to do with it. Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton may intensify the racial elements of the case, but they don't put them there. The whole notion of race-baiting is a right-wing reactionary effort to displace the issue. You must be able to see that.

What people need to realize is that we come to a case like this always-already from a racial perspective. Once more people admit that to themselves, maybe we can begin to make progress. But no one wants to admit this. If Trayvon had survived, it would have been just another black youth who ruthlessly murdered an officer (of some form or other). Race needs to be an issue in this case because we need to consider how we're conditioned to respond racially before the incident even happened. Trying to convince yourself that it's all race-baiting is simply an effort to ignore the broader issue.

Where was that the general image? Zimmerman had his own words edited, misinterpreted as racial slurs, and his injuries seen as non-existent. Martin was just a kid walking back from the store killed by a vigilante that didn't want some black burglar to escape. Plenty of people considered the possibility of Martin defending himself against a creepy racist stalker, but there's not much to support that outside of the testimony of his friend on the phone's claim. It's possible that Zimmerman tried to restrain Martin which resulted in Martin attacking Zimmerman, but what? Did Martin gain the upper-hand and continue to attack Zimmerman for 45 seconds, past the point of what would be considered self-defense (and FWIW if that was the case I would find myself much more on Martin's side)? Was it really Martin screaming for help after all that time while Zimmerman held him down for a prolonged period without leaving any physical marks? They are possibilities, but remote ones. The case for Martin acting in self-defense was simply weak, so if the media on a whole really didn't consider it (certainly you had your Nancy Graces that did) it was because there was little reason to consider it.

Agreed on the prosecution suckig hardcore, but it's hard to not think race played a role in the juries decision based on what the first juror said in her interview.
