I am of the opinion that Jack Churchill was the most badass man that ever lived.

The man fought in WW2 with a longbow and a broadsword and lived to the tell the tale. He also escaped a concentration camp completely unarmed.

My vote goes for Simo Häyhä, he killed over 700 Russians within 100 days during the Winter War. At least 500 of them he killed with a sniper rifle. Oh, and he also survived a shot in the face.

I think the worst time for soldiers must have been the Early modern period. Firearms had been introduced on a large scale but loading techniques were still so bad that they also had to carry melee weapons like swords or bayonettes. That means that they were extremely exposed once they had fired their one shot.

Before and after that period individual soldiers soldier types could at least always face off on equal terms.
