I think the worst time for soldiers must have been the Early modern period. Firearms had been introduced on a large scale but loading techniques were still so bad that they also had to carry melee weapons like swords or bayonettes. That means that they were extremely exposed once they had fired their one shot.

Before and after that period individual soldiers soldier types could at least always face off on equal terms.
