To elaborate on my post:

I'd have to steal one of his bass's and play aimlessly for about 1 minute before my thumb/fingers give out

Don't play bass.
Considering picking up an electric guitar when I can find the money. found a nice Ibanez GR series on GAK for £200 (about $400 in your money).

The only problem being then I'll have to find some cash for a good amp too.
