Have you asked your artist about it? What did they say...
Mine for example (but I actually like this about how mine heal) heal raised. That is, because I am dark skinned, I'm a keloid healer, so my skin scars easily (which does suck). However, all three of my tattoos are raised, and not flat like most peoples are. I quite like it. Sort of like an etching...

a couple of mine are raised too. i've gotten different answers from various tattoo artists. there are a couple problems with me and tattoos. i have thin skin, which dimples when the needle goes in, instead of punching straight through. but we've found a solution for that (smaller and flatter needles). but the problem with the healing issue is that everyone has different reccomendations, and none of them are close to right for my healing problem.
i also have bleeding problems, which pushes the ink out while tattooing. i have the worst body for tattooing. which sucks, because i love it

Bummer man, huge bummer.
I know how important my tattoos are to me (a huge influence on my life), and I would presume your's are of large importance to you as well... so I guess, if you love it, and plan more, get to a skin specialist and investigate what the best way for you to get more done is. I know you probably won't be able to eliminate the problems overall, but if you can minimise them...
