The Poet & the Pendulm Sample (Nightwish)

I for one think Anette is actually an UPGRADE. I actually think Anette could do the earlier classics better than Tarja because Tarja lacked the maturity in her voice when she made them, and never really recovered. Also, Anette WANTS to be there! You always felt an aloofness with Tarja, that she was not really enjoying what she was doing. You can here the joy in this band. Hence, it will be a better act lobg term.

I agree totally, Anette is an upgrade, and she wants to be there, and the guys love her, not just for the voice, but she hangs out with them, and enjoys their company.

And, just to add more thing: I believe Anette is married. Unlike Tarja, you do not have a machismo husband running around thinking everyone is making a pass at his wife. That is DEFINITELY a plus.

this might be off topic...but over at youtube the full song "Amaranth" is around...

hmm well the chorus rocks through and through, but I'm not too sure about everything else. The vocal lines are iffy, and I think the song is boring, except for the chorus.:Smug:

I think some people are letting the whole brew-ha-ha color their opinion. Fact is, vocally, Anette isn't even close to being an "upgrade". Fact is, I find Anette's voice to be quite generic. I'd probably have a hard time differentiating her from the rest of the pack. Whatever you think of Tarja personally, she was a great singer.

That's not saying that she won't be good for Nightwish. I'll have to wait until the full album comes out to see how she works out in general. But, at least with the one song that I've heard, she isn't in the top rung of singers in the genre, IMO.

Agreed. However, it goes the other way, too. ;)

Regardless of how boring (or great) Anette's voice is to fans, it doesn't mean the new album won't be good. Tuomas writes amazing music. As I've said before, I can't say enough good things about the music I've heard so far.

Though I came to Nightwish because of Tarja's vocals, I STAYED because of the music. Let's face it: If it was not for Nightwish, there would be no way I would have even HEARD of ProgPower, nevermind buying 2 Gold Badges to go to it. I also would not have been open to Sonata, Strato, Kamelot and others.

So, Nightwish opened a huge door for this 40-something rocker.

Agreed. One can't help but wonder why the band had to make the extremely personal reasons for the breakup so public (to turn fans against Tarja perhaps? ). Way too many people are letting this soap opera stuff get to their heads. I frankly don't give a shit how much wonderful fun the band members are having being friends with each other, unless it sounds good, which in this case, sadly, I don't think it does.

Here. Here. I, another 40-something rocker (48 to be exact), TOTALLY concur. Nightwish was my real intro to Eurometal. Years ago I was into Queensryche and they led me to Dream Theater and some other great bands. But hearing and finding Nightwish opened up a whole new world of music to me that I had no idea existed. And yes I too found out about ProgPower because of Nightwish. I was there to see them, and I will be there, along with my two sons, this year. If only Glenn had been able to pull off the Finnish coup....

I loved Tarja's singing, and I'm not crazy about Annette yet, but that's OK. If advanced word about the new album is correct, all will be well. And we'll be there to see them in Dallas and Houston in the fall.

Because Tarja was, and remains, an icon in Finland. There would have been a huge firestorm from President Halonen on down to the town drunk living in the box behind the Kitee ALKO if they HADN'T relesed the "Open Letter". That letter calmed the waters. What it also did was call out Tarja's true colors. Remember, for all of Tarja's tears of woe, she has NEVER ONCE REPUDIATED any of the charges that were made in the "Open Letter". She basically held up the fact that she was the equivalent of Terrell Owens in the Nightwish dressing room. Forget Marcelo. As Tarja's manager, he is supposed to look out for his clients' interests.

You think this band does not sound good? How good do you think this band would sound if everyone were at each other's throats? Bands go through lineup changes all the time. How many people would be worshipping Iced Earth if Gene Adam, who refused singing lessons, was allowed to stay? If things go bad, you need to make a change. If things go bad in the dressing room, and if it is the cancer or the patient(band), would you kill the patient?

Peace,
Ray C.

Correcting your typo. "Drunk" should have been plural. Trust me, I saw them.
Anyway, what Ray says is true. Tarja was viewed by many as the face of NW; their angel who could do no wrong, which was of course, not true. The guys were in for a tough time firing her, and the truth might as well be told to give them the opportunity to continue. I'm psyched about the change. I've learned to look forward to bands evolving as opposed to lamenting the past. I met the new singer. She is lovely, friendly, intelligent and very self assured. Can't wait to see her perform.

I never said getting rid of Tarja was not a necessary step for them. What I am saying, however, is that I find it difficult to let Tarja's 'bad behavior' make me enjoy the generic music they are now producing any more (or less) than I currently am.

I pretty much implied that. A lot of things are going to be on the shoulders of Tuomas and his writing. The good thing is that bands can usually survive a lead singer leaving if the main songwriting team stayed intact. It is when songwriters change that you really should fear the future of a band.

BTW, I'm not putting any value judgments on what the band did. If they felt it was necessary, then that is what they needed to do. I don't particularly like the way they handled it, but that doesn't turn me off the band. I'm still picking up the new album when it comes out and judging it on its own merits.

It is just now that we know that it is going to be Tuomas's writing and working with what Anette can do as a vocalist that is going to make or break the future of the band.

Well, yes. See Genesis. And sometimes even the best songwriting teams just run out of steam. See "Hear in the Now Frontier" and "Vapor Trails."

That, apparently has not happened to Nightwish yet. As long as they have a solid front woman and good songs - and good new songs - for her to sing they'll be fine. When the quality of the new songs start to fade, so will they.

My real curiosity is not if Tuomas, and Marco to a lesser extent of course, can keep writing great songs, but whether they will keep up this orchestra thing. Or will they someday make another album more like "Oceanborn" again. I liked "Once" but I do wonder if Tuomas is taking this too far. And their reliance on backup tapes to do the songs live is disturbing. Rock music is best experienced live, in my opinion, and sometimes I wonder, just how much "playing" does Tuomas actually do when they play live?
