Die englischen Doom Deather THE PROPHECY veröffentlichen mit "Into the Light" ihr drittes Werk. Teilweise zerbrechlich wirkende Tracks wie der Titelsong oder "Don´t Forget" leben von dem Wechsel zwischen deathmetallischen Abgehparts mit Growls und seichten, melancholischen Passagen mit cleanem Gesang, der irgendwie ein wenig an ORPHANED LAND erinnert. Damit fällt man natürlich auch in die Kategorie MY DYING BRIDE/ MOURNING BELOVETH, aber auf Grund der vielen extrem ruhigen Passagen auch OPETH.

Die 8 Songs haben logischerweise Genretypisch eine etwas längere Spielzeit, so dass man auf knapp 60 Minuten kommt. Allerdings kommen einige Sachen nicht so recht aus dem Quark, das schöne "Echoes" ist mit fast 10 Minuten denn doch etwas zu lang geraten, da einfach zu wenig passiert im Song. Ebenso beim Abschlußtrack "Home". Die knackigeren "Belief Means Nothing" und "All is Lost" dagegen Deathdoomen schön ins Ohr, da gefällt die Band wesentlich besser.

Wer auf eine ruhigere Variante der obigen Inselkollegen kann bzw. bei OPETH abgeht, der könnte hier an der richtigen Adresse sein!

Nuevo trabajo de la veterana banda británica. Tercero en su carrera de diez años y primero bajo las siglas de Code666.
En lo musical los de Halifax siguen tomando como base el Doom Death de vieja escuela. Ese género que lideran sus compatriotas My Dying Bride y que bandas como Swallow the Sun extienden su legado. La fórmula es la misma aunque mucho menos furiosa que la mostrada en su primer largo ‘’Ashes’’. En estos instantes los pasajes épicos similares a los utilizados por los irlandeses Mourning Beloveth son mucho más extensos y predominan en cada uno de los temas que componen este disco. El choque de voces y sonidos de estas dos caras que presenta The Prophecy, ayuda a que el resultado final sea mucho más interesante de cara al oyente. Además el impacto es grande, la crudeza y fiereza del lado más oscuro de la banda está totalmente en contraposición a la cara más cristalina armónica y melosa de esos pasajes dulces repletos de tristeza y épica.
‘’Into The Light’’ es el trabajo más épico y melódico de la banda, sin perder los cimientos básicos del estilo, si que han explorado más que en su primer trabajo y ahondan más en el camino abierto por ‘’Revelations’’, y para mi oído mejor en calidad y composición que este.
He seguido a está banda desde casi sus comienzos y la considero una de las más fieles abanderadas de esa mezcla de dureza proveniente del Death Metal y la pesadez y sentimentalismo del Doom más metálico. Pese a ello no es un grupo que tenga el reconocimiento proporcional a la calidad que atesora.
The Prophecy es una apuesta más que segura para cualquier amante de este género y no lo solo recomendaros este trabajo sino el conjunto de los tres álbumes de la banda, que sin ser lo mejor del género, poseen grandes temas de puro Doom Death Metal dignos de ser escuchados.

A good enough and ’above average’ quality album is what THE PROPHECY offers us in this third full length CD, named "Into The Light". The Englishmen have till now released albums that stood very close to MY DYING BRIDE, gained some recognition by many friends of that genre and although they were close to their influences they could keep a color of personality.
Here, the whole thing refers mostly to OPETH because of the overall presentation of the songs and some mild progressive passages that sometimes may lead you to PINK FLOYD or something like that. The vocals are divided between brutal ones and some clean high melodic that rise the level of the compositions not only for their quality but also for their lyrical face followed by an equivalent duality in the music.
The first song, "Into The Light", is one of my favorites. It starts like a dark nightmare with an impressive drumming full into the Doom-meets-Death Metal aura of MY DYING BRIDE and old, very old, ANATHEMA. It continues including powerful vocal melodies that are ’mind traveling’ and for the end a riff that points to CANDLEMASS. The dinginess, plethora of melancholic melodies continues inside "Delusion", "Don’t Forget" and reaches the maximum in "Believe Means Nothing", a good structure-based song with sharpened and nice guitars.
It is a fact that sometimes I’m feeling a little tired and tracks like "Echoes" or "Hope" will reach easier people with the appropriate esoteric disposals or brain dead fans of this specific kind of music. THE PROPHECY carries a very heavy atmosphere, like KATATONIA sometimes but I believe somewhere they push that too far without a reason.
To be clear, although "Into The Light" has very few chances to win people not inside this style, it is butter in the bread for all the melancholic hordes that worship depression and the rest. And if I consider the success that OPETH gains I will not be surprised if I would see THE PROPHECY winning more and more friends. And surely if you want sometimes to chill out through dark thoughts this is a very good choice for musical company into your room.

Het Engelse The Prophecy heeft voor mij eigenlijk altijd een beetje de naam gehad van een tweederangs doomband, de welbekende grote namen uit die streek trekken de meeste aandacht, waardoor ik eigenlijk nooit de moeite heb genomen om dit viertal eens aandachtig te beluisteren. Shame on me!

Op Into the Light weet deze band een erg interessante mix van doomdeath en prog te maken, waarbij met name zanger Matt een enorme indruk op me achterlaat. Naast een goede volle grunt heeft deze man een erg aangename cleane stem, die voor sommigen misschien een tikje te nasaal klinkt. Op enkele momenten doet hij me erg aan Mick Moss van Antimatter denken. De band weet een erg mooie balans te creëren tussen doomdeath die aan een wat hardere, oude Paradise Lost doet denken en rustigere stukken die me doen denken aan rustige Anathema meets hardere Antimatter, wat afgewisseld wordt met progressieve elementen die soms bijna te swingend worden voor doom, maar net niet.

Dezer dagen heb ik naast dit album ook de nieuwe My Dying Bride om te beluisteren voor Zware Metalen, en ik moet eerlijk zeggen dat ik met meer plezier naar dit album luister. Er zit meer spanning in, meer verrassing en meer eigenzinnigheid. De mix van doomdeath en prog werkt dat misschien ook wel wat meer in de hand, maar toch boeit dit album me net wat meer.

Autorijden vind ik nooit een probleem. Ook geen lange afstanden. Gewoon CD’tjes luisteren en gassen. Maar wat als je nog 450 kilometer voor de boeg hebt en je krijgt je dashboardkastje, waar je natuurlijk net al je CD’s hebt ingestopt, niet meer open?! Het is mij overkomen, maar gelukkig werd de rit, met enkel de nieuwe CD van The Prophecy in mijn CD-speler, geen straf. Sterker nog, ik ben deze dag zelfs een klein beetje van ‘Into The Light’ gaan houden. De CD begint vrij zwaar. De invloeden van landgenoten My Dying Bride zijn in de eerste helft van het album vrij sterk aanwezig. Maar de muziek doet me ook denken aan een andere landgenoot; Anathema. Daarnaast klinken af en toe wat Opeth-geluiden door. Veel raakvlakken dus, maar toch een geheel eigen geluid. Het meest ben ik gaan houden van het nummer „Echoes”. In tegenstelling tot de drie eerste songs een iets meer up-tempo nummer met zeer pakkende melodielijnen. Maar ook het zwaardere, wat meer doomy-achtige „Waters Deep” is echt geweldig. Knap hoe heavy, maar tegelijkertijd heel intiem dit album kan zijn. Petje af.

"Sometimes words aren't sufficient to say how a band is underrated. How is that possible for THE PROPHECY not to be the most famous doom metal act recently founded ? I can't understand that. At least it's the best one, no matter people admit it or not. "Into the light" is the perfect follower to "Revelations", the second opus to be absolutely perfect.
After an excellent but quite traditional "Ashes", the music of the band exploded in 2006 on the above-mentioned album. Now the music evolved once again, in the same way a band like ANATHEMA already took. The main atmospheric doom death basis is still very obvious, but clear vocals are becoming more and more present and the whole stuff took a progressive rock touch. You'll still find a lot of guttural voices, some energic accelerations and nervous passages, but they are melted with a bunch of splendid melodies and catchy tunes. "Into the light" is a doom metal masterpiece, the varied and polychromatic tracks will surely seduce everyone who's searching for a great doom album."

nto the Light is the third release from this British band. On the first spin I went: "great crushing Doom Metal!" Later on though, my excitement level dropped down when I heard the clean nasal voices…This is not quite what I had expected. That's the only weakness on this album however, and the compositions are all pretty good, some even excellent. The Prophecy appears as a mixture of classic Doom Metal acts, such as My Dying Bride and Novembers Doom with REM (the clean vocals are reminiscent of REM). The riffing is crushing while the pace is usually moderate, but do slow down at times. The songs are intense and include acoustic guitars as well as ambient keyboards. The guitar work is very good, and easily gets my vote as being the most interesting element on this CD. It is varied and relies frequently on clean arpeggios, which is always an appropriate way to incorporate harmonies and emotions in music. The Prophecy is not just confined to Doom Metal, being able to bring a progressive touch while including intricate time signatures into their songwriting.
All eight tracks are good on this album, with my preferences going for: "Delusion", "Echoes" (the most melodic song) and "All is Lost".

Proprio nel periodo in cui i maestri indiscussi del doom britannico, i My Dying Bride, calano sulle scene con il decimo tassello della loro gloriosa discografia, ecco che, originari praticamente della stessa zona geografica (lo Yorkshire), i loro figliocci The Prophecy li precedono di poco sul mercato internazionale con un disco davvero stupendo. Di loro, almeno qui in Italia, si sa ancora poco: due album pubblicati – “Ashes” nel 2003 e “Revelations” nel 2007 – non sono bastati per far arrivare la loro nomea fin da noi; ora, grazie all’acume della sempre interessante Code666, è proprio l’Italia a spingere in avanti questo “Into The Light”, nuovo, maturo lavoro di un gruppo che merita sicuramente attenzione. Partiti dalla riproposizione delle classiche sonorità doom-gothic inglesi dei Nineties, Greg O’Shea e compagni hanno via via incorporato sempre più influenze progressive nel loro stile, fino ad arrivare ad oggi nella proposizione di un progressive doom/death metal atmosferico ed epico, straziante e malinconico, ma anche abrasivo e groovy. Tanti sono i nomi che vengono alla mente all’ascolto del platter: Pink Floyd, Opeth, My Dying Bride, Tool, Bokor, Novembers Doom, Anathema, Katatonia; eppure, nonostante richiami evidenti e piuttosto definiti alle band citate, i The Prophecy sanno essere convincenti ed in qualche modo personali, oltre ovviamente a fornirci la possibilità di ascoltare otto composizioni di qualità sopraffina, divise tra lunghe suite crepuscolari (“Echoes”, “Waters Deep”, la magnifica “Hope”) ed episodi decisamente più dinamici, melodici e death-oriented, quali ad esempio “Delusion”, “Belief Means Nothing” e “Don’t Forget”. Il songwriting, come detto, è sopraffino, anche essendo tutto sommato scevro da grandi arricchimenti: poche tastiere qua e là e sezioni di violoncello – fra cui l’outro finale di “Hope” – servono a donare classe ad arpeggi acustici sempre azzeccati e ad un riffing semplice, ficcante e possente, addirittura di stampo thrashy in brevi frangenti. Potrebbe risultarvi leggermente fastidioso, soprattutto durante le primissime fruizioni, il timbro nasale del cantato pulito di Matt Lawson, che poi però ha il grandissimo pregio di riscattarsi con un growl profondo e fra i più decifrabili sentiti ultimamente, davvero ottimo. In definitiva, “Into The Light” ci rivela quindi una formazione da tenere d’occhio e che siamo piuttosto sicuri possa evolvere ancora parecchio nei prossimi anni. Nell’attesa di sviluppi interessanti, cominciamo a godere per bene di questo splendente gioiellino in chiaro-scuro.

Il metallo del fato

Ma come, è uscito un nuovo disco dei My Dying Bride e nessuno dice nulla?
E soprattutto, i My Dying Bride sono tornati indietro ai tempi di "Turn Loose The Swans" e non un cane che abbia avvertito?

Poi, mentre il disco procede, vai a guardare meglio la copertina e scopri che in realtà stai ascoltando "Into The Light", terzo disco dei Prophecy, ovvero il gruppo progressive doom di Greg O'Shea e John Bennett. Sì, esattamente progressive doom; basterebbe la title-track posta in apertura per capire che i ragazzi sono grandi appassionati di prog metal di penultima e ultima generazione: Dream Theater, Evergrey, Threshold e compagnia. Eccovi quindi cori, armonie, cambi di tempo e atmosfera come se piovesse.

Il risultato non è affatto un male, soprattutto perché fatto con perizia e anche una certa dose di buon gusto - il rischio di pastrocchi è sempre in agguato quando si maneggia il doom all'europea, figuriamoci quando lo si arricchisce di voci pulite, assoli, ritmiche strane. I The Prophecy invece riescono a restare al di qua della barricata, scrivendo canzoni interessanti e che si lasciano ascoltare anche più di una volta con attenzione, complesse e stratificate come sono.

Resta il problema del cui prodest: Non siamo di fronte a una rivoluzione o a un'idea di quelle che ti cambiano la carriera, ecco, solo a un buon disco di mestiere che farà felici tutti i fan del metallo del destino e magari dei più coraggiosi tra gli amanti di quello della progressione. Gli altri possono anche passare oltre, a conti fatti.

The Prophecy "Into The Light"


Omtale - 21.03.2009 - Skrevet av: haavard The Prophecy er et hardtarbeidende engelsk Doom-band som har fulgt litt i fotsporene til den klassiske tidlige 90-talls Doomen til My Dying Bride, Anathema osv. Nå synes jeg ikke de hadde utviklet helt sitt eget sound tidligere, men på bandets tredje forsøk "Into The Light" så er det betraktelig til bedring å spore, for dette er da ganske bra for å være dagens Doom sjanger som ikke så ofte har noe orginalt å by på.
Det mest positive med "Into The Light" er egentlig variasjonen mellom litt "oldschool" 90-talls Doom med den ganske typiske growlevokalen, samt at de har noen fantastiske mere episke trekk med seg, hvor vokalist Matt Lawson faktisk behandler vokalen på særdeles sjarmerende vis. Den har en egen sound i seg selv, og når de får flyten i de mere harmoniske partiene så er albumet på sitt aller beste.


"Delusion" låta er vel den som viser dette aller best, hvor variasjonen sitter som den skal, og trekkene i karakter er mest for når de ramler litt for mye inn i den gamle litt traurige 90-talls Doomen og ikke klarer å ta steget helt ut. Men heldigvis er plata jevn og god, og jeg vil anta at bandet virkelig kan gjøre litt furore hvis de klarer å ta enda et lite steg videre i evolusjonen og spille enda mere på å gjøre sin egen greie utav dette.


Dette albumet var ihvertfall en positiv overraskelse her i gården.

There is a band of the Great Britain Doom scene which is growing and growing and growing… Maybe that you still don't know The Prophecy but if you like My Dying Bride, Mourning Beloveth or even stuff like Katatonia, I'm ready to bet some beers that you'll like their new and second album "Into The Light". In the Doom Death Metal category with clean vocals, we're just in front of a real potential new leader of the genre!

What I like the most in "Into The Light" is the really good alternation between the aggressive Doom Death passages and the really beautiful clean vocals ones. From the beginning to the end of the album, you'll listen to great Doom Death Metal, ok not the most depressive and dark one but still if you like My Dying Bride you'll like this release. The songs all follow a simple but effective structure, slow depressive Doom/Death passages separated by cool atmospheric and melodic ones (which could remind you Mourning Beloveth on some of their songs). This is maybe a bit too "cute" sometime (I'm a bit exaggerating here) but if you're not looking for extreme Doom, believe me it will be perfect (and a lot better than Swallow The Sun for example). "Into The Light" is a really good album and in the genre I truly believe that The Prophecy deserves to be known a lot more by the metalheads.

"Into The Light" is a perfectly recorded release and its cover is nice too. Of course the guys are still good musicians and I even believe that Matt Lawson voice is better this time. All in all, The Prophecy is just improving with time and that's great really. It's never easy to do a good album when your first release was already great. They did it so now let's just hope that they will follow this road and The Prophecy will score the goal!

If you're an aficionados of the British Doom Death Metal scene "Into The Light" is highly recommended to you. Have a look at this release seriously you'll have some good surprises. Be aware though that this is not extreme Doom and that if you're looking for really depressive dark music, you'll not find what you're looking for. Being accessible, "Into The Light" will probably find a lovely success but I'm quite sure too that the fans of strong Doom Metal will find good things for them too. Give a chance to The Prophecy they deserve it!

Attivi da circa dieci anni e provenienti dalla Gran Bretagna, i The Prophecy giungono con questo nuovo lavoro “Into The Light”, edito per l’etichetta Code 666 Records, alla pubblicazione del proprio terzo album in studio, facendo ritorno sul mercato discografico a due anni di distanza dal precedente “Revelations”. La formazione attuale di questo combo britannico vede Matt Lawson alla voce, Greg O'Shea alla chitarra, Gavin Parkinson al basso e John Bennett (session dei My Dying Bride) alla batteria, coadiuvati da Steph Boyle al cello. Musicalmente il genere proposto dai The Prophecy è riconducibile ad un doom/death metal particolarmente melodico, con palpabili partiture di tipo sinfonico, sulla scia dei migliori My Dying Bride, con in più diverse tracce di band come Anathema, Katatonia ed Opeth. Nel suo genere e nel proprio complesso, “Into The Light” è un album assolutamente eccellente, prodotto in modo impeccabile e suonato in maniera altrettanto egregia, con la capacità di porre in evidenza le ottimi doti tecniche nonché compositive di una band dotata di un’incredibile personalità. Si parte con “Into The Light”, la title-track, che nei suoi circa sette minuti di durata si dimostra come un componimento massiccio e compatto, dotato di una pacata dose di brutalità, assestandosi su ritmi essenzialmente lenti, ma sempre pungenti ed incisivi, “Don't Forget” a seguire, è caratterizzato da una sottile linea melodica che funge da spina dorsale al brano stesso, fondendo partiture molto intense a fraseggi energici, “Delusion” invece, è un episodio particolarmente ispirato, corredato da splendidi arpeggi di chitarra. “Echoes” decolla in modo armonico, nascondendosi dietro una ponderata malinconia in un vortice melodico estatico, “Belief Means Nothing” è un pezzo ruvido, granitico e robusto, caratterizzato da un notevole impatto, mentre “All Is Lost” vede estremizzare al massimo il sound della band, che in “Waters Deep” mostra uno stile versatile e dinamico e nella conclusiva “Hope” racchiude la propria essenza riassumendo i contenuti di un disco dall’incredibile valore artistico.

THE PROPHECY | Into The Light

L'immensità del mare può suscitare emozioni gradevoli oppure incutere timore, riflettendo l'impossibilità di carpirne i segreti.

Il fascino insito nelle onde che si spingono sino alla riva, dissipando il calore lavico disceso da scogliere alte e frastagliate, aveva ben simboleggiato i contenuti di Ashes, poi ripresi in occasione del meno ispirato Revelations. Indissolubilmente legata agli anni Novanta, la proposta dei Prophecy esplora adesso territori che in una certa misura se ne discostano, adottando soluzioni talvolta distanti dal death doom melodico degli esordi. L'imprevedibilità di Into The Light è dunque racchiusa fra le note delle splendide "Echoes" e "Hope", nelle quali si mantengono i classici tempi lenti e gli immancabili break melodici, adottando però una produzione che rende quanto meno particolare la resa della sezione ritmica. A volte le onde si ritirano come risucchiate dal mare per poi tornare con più violenza di prima, giustificando così l'utilizzo di un timbro vocale ora carezzevole e in men che non si dica tanto profondo da togliere il respiro. "Waters Deep" è in tal senso un episodio che svolge diligentemente il ruolo di apertura, svelando a piccoli passi gli ingredienti essenziali di un lavoro all'interno del quale la fluida struttura di base viene interrotta da break acustici e persino frazioni caotiche ("Belief Means Nothing"). Intenso e freddo allo stesso tempo, Into The Light vive di luci ed ombre che ne impediscono una più agevole fruizione, relegandolo di fatto al ruolo di album transitorio...

Gli inglesi The Prophecy sono eredi della lunga tradizione britannica in fatto di doom, la qual cosa è ribadita dal presente “Into The Light”, terzo full-lenght della band.
Quando parlo di tradizione faccio riferimento alle varie scuole che la terra d’Albione ha generato, partendo dai Black Sabbath, passando per i Candlemass e My Dying Bride, per finire agli Anathema. C’è un po’ di tutto questo nel disco.
Un disco che non ha la proverbiale lentezza del doom, se non a sprazzi, le cui sonorità sono sospese a cavallo tra vecchio e nuovo, con riffs grassi e produzione moderna, con canzoni che spesso hanno una struttura settantiana, richiamando un certo filone progressivo di quegli anni, come ad esempio in”Beliefs Means Nothing”.
Ad arricchire la proposta è il doppio cantato, growls e clean vocals, il quale sa sempre sottolineare alla perfezione il mood del momento.
Le canzoni sono tutte mediamente lunghe, variegate, dinamiche, e possono essere divise in due categorie, ovvero troviamo pezzi più propriamente doom, con le caratteristiche di cui sopra, come nel trittico iniziale oppure in “All Is Lost”, e poi possiamo trovare pezzi lenti, dove prevalgono le clean vocals, dove non si disdegnano influenze più gotiche e arpeggi di chitarra acustica. È il caso delle stupende “Echoes”, “Waters Deep” e la conclusiva “Hope”. In questi pezzi la band raggiunge il proprio apice espressivo ed emozionale.
Questo disco ha il suo pregio maggior nell’essere completo, vario, capace di guardare alla tradizione con occhio moderno, mantenendo sempre un livello delle canzoni mediamente elevato. È doom rock d’alta scuola. Ad avercene di dischi così.

Neoriginální vzlyky o krutém světě

Druhdy perspektivní doommetalisté, kteří v roce 2008 propluli i pražským klubem Exit – Chmelnice, na své třetí desce zklamali. Už obálka originální jako obrázek na přebalu Strážné věže (či tato metafora) prokazuje, že veledílo od "Into the Light" čekat nelze. Zatímco minulou desku "Revelations" byla škoda přehlédnout, byť k tomu svou nenápadností spěla, novému albu je naopak škoda věnovat čas.
THE PROPHECY na "Into the Light" zachovali písničkovou strukturu svých (často předlouhých) kompozic a drží se i touhy dát svým skladbám ne zcela předvídatelný vývoj. Zatímco největším nešvarem druhé desky byly až příliš zřetelné příklony ke zvuku kapel jako MY DYING BRIDE, (ne)překvapivost novinky je postavena na čekání, kterou z doomových manýr si kapela osvojí v následujícím momentu. Angličané jakoby se snažili zpřehlednit a zprůhlednit své počínání, za což ovšem platí naprostým rozmělněním osobitosti i absencí podnětné atmosféry, která by vyžadovala o poznání větší podíl neočekávatelného. Ano, skladbám THE PROPHECY nelze upřít pestrost. Ale ani to, že jejich přesná, nicméně taky školácká a šablonovitá struktura nakonec působí hůře, než kdybychom v nich spatřovali dílčí rezervy a mohli doufat v nápravu. Takto album působí jako produkt, který chce být originální tím, že nekopíruje jediné schéma, ale mixuje schémat vícero.
Hlas Matta Lawsona dokáže kolísat mezi hrubozrnným deathovým zabarvením a srozumitelnou zpěvností. U textů jako "Please can you help me – I'm drowning in this fear – Yeah!", by ale bylo lépe, kdybychom mu nerozuměli. THE PROPHECY se nebojí úkroků k deathu, mnohem více jim ale jde o budování tradiční deprimující doomové nálady s občasnými odskoky k funerální drásavosti. Otrocké řazení těchto prvků, které nemůže zachránit ani precizní studiová práce Grega Chandlera (ESOTERIC), však ústí v to, že album zní více jako opakování doommetalové násobilky, než deska operující s intenzivními emocemi. Éteričnost v podání THE PROPHECY je značně vyčpělá, protože podmanivou a neurčitou atmosféru prostě nelze vytvořit kumulací prostředků, které každý zná. Jediné, čeho tak docílíte, je prvoplánové porozumění mezi vámi a těmi méně náročnými. Anebo dojem, že největší díl skepse nakonec THE PROPHECY rozsévají svou průměrností.
"Into the Light" nevyčerpává naléhavostí skladeb, ale délkou a gradující nevýrazností, která vás přivede do chvíle, kdy album nelze v kuse doposlouchat. Spíše než old-schoolový, je doom metal v podání THE PROPHECY moderně sterilní. Kdyby v rámci tak svojského žánru, jakým je doom, existoval neškodný střední proud, byli by THE PROPHECY jeho čelním reprezentantem. A člověk aby se děsil, která další kapela se upíše některému ze sub-labelů vydavatelství Aural a přijde pod ním o svou osobitost.
