the "rage effect" or "rage situation"

Tears of a Mandrake not being played was a disappointment but overall I highly enjoyed their set

I always enjoy an Edguy set. Sometimes I think people are little spoiled in general. 10 years ago it was only a dream to have this calibre (and number) of bands play in the US.

I think Symphony X had the worst sound I experienced at PP, because the guitar was so treble-heavy - and treble frequencies are what can really hurt your hearing. I had to keep earplugs in for that set...after which I still enjoyed it.

I am glad you mentioned this. I think I lost some of my hearing from their set. It was painful to listen to. I now wear ear plugs to most concerts I go to because of this. It definitely taught me a lesson about taking care of my ears.

For those unaware, this was a one time anomaly. Back then, the house engineer ran the sound. He had an emergency and had to step away. Thus, we had his back-up and he sucked. I now fly in Ernie (he does sound for Helloween, Edguy, etc, etc) from Germany just to do the sound. It's expensive, but worth it as *all* bands know his reputation and respect him.

I think I remember most of them! This is not in correct order (Although I remember the first two songs and the encores in order) though:

Don't Fear the Winter
Paint the Devil on the Wall
Firestorm
Black in Mind
Solitary Man
Down
Dies Irae
Set the World on Fire
Smolski's solo
Unity
Terrana's solo
War of the Worlds (Keep in mind this was a couple months before the album actually came out)
From the Cradle to the Grave
All I Want (encore #1)
Higher than the Sky (encore #2)

Thank you!

Just in case you are interested, here is the exact set list in order:

Don’t Fear The Winter
Paint The Devil On The Wall
Sent By The Devil
Firestorm
Down
Set This World On Fire
War Of The Worlds
Black In Mind
Solitary Man
Smolski solo
Unity
Terrana solo
Dies Irae
From The Cradle To The Grave
All I Want
Higher Than The Sky

(Not bad DF - only missed one and the order was very close! Only reason I know it now is because I wrote it down that night!)

I knew there was one I was missing! I thought it was Sent by the Devil, too, but I couldn't recall. I wrote down the setlist, too, but it's stored somewhere with all my concert stuff, so I had to try to list it all from memory lol.

I agree with you. We have gotten spoiled. Before PP, we would have NEVER dreamed to see this caliber of a band here in the US let alone Atlanta. We all owe Glenn a HUGE debt of gratitude.:notworthy

Last year was my 1st PPUSA fest and i was really impressed with the sound. Alot of times you go to see heavy bands like these and the sound is all muddy. The only band i had a problem understanding was Evergreys vocals (at times), the band was LOUD,lol.

I can always tell the difference when the rare time someone else does the sound.

The killer thing is that the headliners that bring their own FOH guy and get an hour plus to soundcheck while the other bands only get linechecks. Ernie truly adjusts the sound on the fly. You may not like the first minute or two of the sound for any band, but by the end of that tune he will have it fixed.

On a side note, Ernie dancing his ass off behind the board during Freak Kitchen (which he had never heard before) was one of the greatest moments in ProgPower USA history.

Didn't all bands get to soundcheck before the fest in past years? Or do some bands just not show up early enough to do so?

They did in the early versions, but not the last few years. Between having Ernie and our own crew's experience, we can handle the show without killing ourselves before the doors open.

Yeah, I noticed that. At first I'm like, "Uh oh" and then around the second song everything sounds perfect.
