The REAL football thread.

Have you seen Ronaldo play? or Kaka, etc?

It is unbelievably skillful. By the way MLS is so piss poor compared to the European leagues id probably hate the sport too if I was a yank.

Speaking of that, 1.30 minutes, Ronaldo misses the fucking penalty! GOD DAMN IT.

Well I suppose the statement is POSSIBLY true for say a central defender. They just need to be bruising fucks who can make recovery runs if need be, but take a look at people like C. Ronaldo. You really think that it takes no skill to control the ball with your feet like players do? It's not something you can just do.
I have seen European soccer and it is better than the MLS. I'm not trying to suggest it isn't skillful, but compare it to other sports. A baseball player not only has to hit a ball hurtling toward him at 90 mph, he also has defend his position. Pitching accurately and with velocity is also extremely difficult. Basketball players have to shoot the ball into a very small net and have to dribble with their hands and run at the same time. Hockey players are on ice skates and have to control a tiny puck with sticks. The thing that separates them is that their is less running and more substitutions (hence my claim that soccer is the most athletic sport).

You are a very big baseball fan arent you?

By the way a goalkeeper has to save shots hurtling towards them at great speeds. These arguements are stupid, we arent here to debate we're here to talk about the games and the players.

I'm torn between my hate for ManU, and my desire for an English team to win.

I'll compromise and hope they draw.

Man U, Bolton and Burnley are the only English teams I'll go against in Europe. England is great and all, but I actually can't bear the thought of any of these guys winning a trophy.

As for the Chelsea v Liverpool match, I think Chelsea were just about worth their draw, it serves Riise right for not having any sort of right foot.

Indeed.

But thank you CC, for not suggesting yank football is better. I can actually understand the arguments you're making :p

Basketball players have to shoot the ball into a very small net and have to dribble with their hands and run at the same time.

On a small court. For example, Maradona's goal v England. Half the length of the pitch, control at all times.

And a goal can be made very small by a good goalkeeper, hence why scoring is so low.

The hockey and baseball thing I can't really dispute.

Well, I do love the World Cup and I nearly jumped through my ceiling when Italy won it!

However, I would suggest a few things to improve the game of Soccer.

1. Make the nets bigger-need more goals of course.

2. As much as I enjoyed Italy winning, I didn't like the fashion...in a shootout. I know they could play forever or until someone collapses and dies, but no Championship game should end in a shootout.

3. The hell with offsides, if a defender lets someone get behind him and score, then thats his fault (again-more goals).

4. If they are going to give players fouls for hard tackles, then do the same for players that flop around like sunfish on a dock. I'm sick and tired of a guy laying on the ground for 20-minutes because he was grazed buy a defenders shoelace.

5. The World Cup should be every 2-years, it would premote the game and its star players more frequently. Four years is a long wait in between cups, I will not recognize any players from Italy when they take the pitch in the next World Cup. Actually some of thier children may be old enough to play by the next World Cup.

6. I don't know if his schedule will allow it, but they should have that Spanish announcer broadcast every game, you know the one that shouts goal, wait I mean "gooooooooooooooooaaaaaaaaaaal" every time someone scores. Then after the goal have those Spanish soap opera chicks from the same network run onto the field and kiss the player who scores, (again more incentive & more goals).

7. Lastly, the Refs should not only have yellow and red cards, but also have the players green cards...you know, to check eligability.

GO SOCCER:lol:

Suggesting a sport is better or worse is not really possible. It's just what you want out of a game. Personally I prefer lots of strategy and skill, hence baseball. Soccer is more a game of will and feats of remarkable athleticism

This post hurt me so much I had to reply, even if it was just a joke (Which I hope it was)

1. Make the nets bigger-need more goals of course.

NO. The goals are that size for a reason.
2. As much as I enjoyed Italy winning, I didn't like the fashion...in a shootout. I know they could play forever or until someone collapses and dies, but no Championship game should end in a shootout.

Well if neither are good enough to finish off the game then they deserve the pot luck of a shootout.
This is a coming from a Spurs supporter. We got knocked out the UEFA cup by a shootout, but it's entertaining at least.
And an England supporter. I don't even want to talk about England and shootouts.
3. The hell with offsides, if a defender lets someone get behind him and score, then thats his fault (again-more goals).

 This would mean less goals. Defenders would spend their entire time back, because they wouldn't have the offside rule, and would take the skill off playing the offside trick.
4. If they are going to give players fouls for hard tackles, then do the same for players that flop around like sunfish on a dock. I'm sick and tired of a guy laying on the ground for 20-minutes because he was grazed buy a defenders shoelace.

The amount of time people complain about this, it so rarely happens. Generally players go down because they've just had the shit kicked out of them. Diving is being pushed out the game, in England at least. Yellow cards are being brandished well.
5. The World Cup should be every 2-years, it would premote the game and its star players more frequently. Four years is a long wait in between cups, I will not recognize any players from Italy when they take the pitch in the next World Cup. There is. It's called the Euros. Happens between the World Cup. European teams compete. That includes Italy. Happening this summer infact.
6. I don't know if his schedule will allow it, but they should have that Spanish announcer broadcast every game, you know the one that shouts goal, wait I mean "gooooooooooooooooaaaaaaaaaaal" every time someone scores.

That would be awesome.

Then after the goal have those Spanish soap opera chicks from the same network run onto the field and kiss the player who scores, (again more incentive & more goals).

Fail.
7. Lastly, the Refs should not only have yellow and red cards, but also have the players green cards...you know, to check eligability.

Ohoho. The wit.

Then after the goal have those Spanish soap opera chicks from the same network run onto the field and kiss the player who scores, (again more incentive & more goals).

Only if they're nekkid.

ON: The Man Utd / or foreign team support quandry. I go for the foreign team every time, as I hate the fucking red wankers - though my hatred did once subside, it is now fuelled by my intense loathing of that sulky faced little diving bastard C. Ronaldo. Honestly. If I was Rooney, I'd have kicked that little cunt to death by now, the cheating, self-important little CUNT.

Two more games. Can Wolves make it ? What a fucking season...

However, I would suggest a few things to improve the game of Soccer.

Lord save us.

1. Make the nets bigger-need more goals of course.

No, don't. More goals do not necessarily mean a better game

2. As much as I enjoyed Italy winning, I didn't like the fashion...in a shootout. I know they could play forever or until someone collapses and dies, but no Championship game should end in a shootout.

Games have to be decided in some fashion. The shoot out adds drama in a grand scale.

3. The hell with offsides, if a defender lets someone get behind him and score, then thats his fault (again-more goals).

Which by extension will lead to ten players per side stood in the penalty area waiting each lofted clearance to reach them. The off side rule adds much more than it takes, and is mostly opposed by those who don't understand the flow of the game.

4. If they are going to give players fouls for hard tackles, then do the same for players that flop around like sunfish on a dock. I'm sick and tired of a guy laying on the ground for 20-minutes because he was grazed buy a defenders shoelace.

Agreed. Harsher penalties for divers would be a good thing. Rugby players don't feign injury, and they respect the referee.

5. The World Cup should be every 2-years, it would premote the game and its star players more frequently. Four years is a long wait in between cups, I will not recognize any players from Italy when they take the pitch in the next World Cup. Actually some of thier children may be old enough to play by the next World Cup.

Why not have it every year ? Oh yeah, because then it wouldn't mean anything. The European championship, the Americas cup and the African cup of nations are all held in between the world cups, as well as all the action in the major club leagues and champions league

GO SOCCER:lol:[/QUOTE]

Die you cunt, it's called football.

Geez guys, lighten up. I was mainly joking about my suggestions.

The game is fine, I enjoy the MLS but my REVS are turning into the Buffalo Bills of Soccer. The World Cup is without a doubt the greatest sporting event given the Global passion from the fans and the intensity of every match.
I've been to the North End in Boston during some of Italys World Cup matches and had a great time!

I have seen European soccer and it is better than the MLS. I'm not trying to suggest it isn't skillful, but compare it to other sports. Soccer is EXTREMELY skill intensive. Your legs/feet are "less coordinated" than your hands are. Dribbling a soccer ball is much harder than dribbling a basketball, especially while running at high speeds, or when there are players for the opposing team going for the ball trying to take it away from you. And passing or shooting a soccer ball accurately is far more difficult than throwing any kind of ball accurately. You can take someone who is an exceptional athlete and put him on a soccer field, and he'll suck if he's never played before.
