I think it's different in each band because there are strong personalities and musicians who can rule the whole band. Not because they are selfish idiots or something but because they are good musicians and the others are only following them because they are not that good in songwriting.
IMO the songs which were written by only one person - especially when we speak about darker songs - are the best songs. They can be deeply from the soul.
When they are rehearsing they cannot make songs with the same feelings (as what they write alone), especially when there are stupid and selfish people in a band. It's hard to work together when you cannot arrange anything. And then you can not really concentrate when you feel kinda 'punishment'
