allright, after deciding to get new monitors i want to know whats best for metal music. i think you guys have your prefered monitors for mixing and can tell me what brand does work best for me. i know, every ear is uniqe but your opinion can give me the direction where the journey will go to.

adam a7s. They have a really great mid range, such is great for working with guitar heavy music.

Barefoot MM27s. Best for all kinds of music. If they're too expensive, then Klein & Hummel O300s. If they're too expensive, then PMC TB2SA+s. If they're too expensive, then Dynaudio BM6As. If they're too expensive, then you're fucked :)

I've got like a $40 set of dell desktop speakers that came with a pretty old computer, but they still pump out the most realistic sound I could imagine complete with subwoofer with an easy little knob. I know that's not what you're looking for..... but I hear a lot about customizing monitors and having trouble with bass control and the frequequencies, which pretty much defeats the purpose of trying to have better quality speakers.

I can set it so it sounds natural with other CDs and then mix my own music with the bass set at a normal amount. Works out quite well really.

i can drool over the mm27's i want them so bad !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i can taste it.. pretty sure if things go right on a few projects i have been contacted about. they might have a formidable future replacing every thign but the ns10's since they translate so well on small systems....

i am stuck with bm5's, ns10s, alesis mk2's and a rocket sub and some junk harmon kardon cpu speakers .... mixing with all 3 sets and final check on cpu junk. The sub never turns on unless i am doing rap or mixing sub. mixes translate really well, but i have used this technique for a good while and know all my monitors really well

Haha, dude, I've heard great things about the BM5's, and the NS10's have certainly proved themselves - I wouldn't call that being "stuck" :p

ns10's are not really accurate at all...some call them horrid sounding but there's the old saying if it sounds good on ns10's it will sound great smaller systems .. the dyn's are nice but miss some really low bass below 60hz making it hard to judge the low end properly.. the bm6.5 and bm10s go lower ...... . i have been looking for something a little more accurate like the mm27's not to mention they look killer as well... i do pretty much every genera of music including a ton of bass heavy music and i want the most accurate monitoring and ad/da system possible. i dont have too much time for recalls anymore, the more accurate monitors, less recalls i will have making my studio more productive till i finish my b room for edits

I bought them and like them so far:ESI NEAR05
The only drawback is they tend to sound more woofy than on other systems. but if you aware of that you can keep it in mind if you're mixing, so ...

From what I hear, the investment is worth it..

If you want to cut corners a little but still get an *AMAZING* sounding monitor (in the way that monitors sound amazing, good on good stuff, terrible on bad stuff, yknow) look into the Kein & Hummel O300s. They go down to around 40Hz evenly (without a sub) and drop off quite nicely below that. They thump insanely... I actually wouldn't get anything subbier for a home studio environment. These absolutely played havoc with untreated rooms. They sounded stellar in larger rooms with treatment/diffusion, but absolutely terrible in smaller untreated rooms.

Not an NS10 or BM5 fan here. The BM5 sounds a bit like a boombox/hyped stereo compared to its more neutral cousin, the BM6. I've tried some BM15a's too but they didn't do it for me. NS10's are just... I don't know how people can bring themselves to listen to them 8+ hours a day. My ears wanna commit suicide after seconds.

i know what your saying about the ns10's i just got them because so many mixers know them. if someone comes to my place they can know the monitors already.. i use the bm5's and alesis mk2s with focal woofers in the cabinets i blew 4 sets of the regular woofers at realistic volume levels. it was only 500 for the woofs and tweets at cost ind... the enclosures were almost idential as far as required air space they sound amazing now compared to what they sounded like from the factory but only really accurate to about 48 hz then roll off,as a trade off they hype 100-500 a bit and really helps dial that hard to deal with range in...

Depends on which suit your needs/hearing more. The Adams have the distinctive ribbon tweeter which is shared amongst their higher-end speakers. It's different to a fabric dome tweeter sound, so you'd need to hear it for yourself. Their response didn't do much for me, personally. They were beaten out by Dynaudio BM5as in the same price range. The Yamahas I've always found to be 2nd rate monitors, so they don't really compete with Dynaudio in that price range, IMO.

The BM5A is the only powered monitor under $1600/pr USD MSRP I've heard that didn't sound hyped or boomy or muffled or harsh... but only in comparison to other products in that same price range. I've no doubt that the BM6 is even better. :)

If you compare them side by side in a good acoustic environment, you'd be surprised how much better the BM6A is as a monitor. It instantly sounds more even. It has surprisingly tight low-end response for a ported design. Nothing compared to the O300's infinite baffle, but all the same, quite reasonable for the price!
