The use of limiters in modern metal....

I do notice a major difference, between "reasonably loud" and "loud as fuck." Usually the kick drum suffers the most.... even after pre-emphasising it during mixdown. It just seems to die.

use the sneap kick sample. it cuts through the mix like a knife!!

not necesarilly! A great engineer will achieve such high levels without distortion. It's the distortion produced by the limiter, which accounts for that shitty sound of drums etc., and this distortion occurs when the tracks are not EQed of any obsolete high-amplitude ranges, especially bass, which can really drive limiter crazy. That's the art of mastering and mixing as well - to carve the tracks in such a way that they will gel into a loud as hell monolith even after insane limiting
