I bought his 1984 debut years ago and I just couldn't get into it.
It's by no means masterful, but for cheesy pop metal? By far the best in my view with the exception of Europe. Glam is way better for a reason. He recorded 3 good pop metal albums and then went soft country rock. Not a note worth listening to for 30 years now.

It's all shit though, "Bad Medicine" is as shit and cheesy as any previous hits, "I'll Be There For You" is as cringy a ballad as any previous ballads. You might be much more familiar with the deep cuts of course, I only know the hits and what I heard on the debut.

There's a more pristine melodic edge on the first 3. By New Jersry, he abandons any and all originality of melody.

In Japan? I don't think you can really stereotype it in that way, have you seen their karaoke businesses? They're massive, some are multiple stories high and yeah you do get white collar workers but it's also popular as a dating activity or for family gatherings.

I wouldn't take a date or my family anywhere near a western karaoke by contrast.

What if your date likes karaoke? I think it's a great idea for a wedding reception. Hell, we have live band karaoke in my neck of the woods. Real shit.

I had a brief stint while still in the Marines where I had a cool crew to karaoke with on Saturday nights at a local hole in the wall where we knew the person running the machine who gave us more preference as opposed to the random other Marines and guidos each weekend. Was good fun but eventually the person running it couldn't anymore and the owner renovated enough to attract more woogirls and soyboys and it all went to shit.
