The what's going on in Thrash thread

I was hoping they'd be like the re release of the Death catalog. Those are jewel plus they have a sleeve.
Of course they weren't as influential as Death, but still. When you're talk about something being special ... make it special!

They did 'special' vinyl releases of all the albums with coloured vinyl and extra tracks (which were possibly the EP's and demos available on the band site), but I don't know that Metal Blade cared too much about the CD versions.

It does have the demos on it. And a song called Reign Of Terror lol.

According to Metal Archives there has been another release since the vinyl ones. Metal Blade re-released (in Sept 2019) what they originally released in 1990. They did a digipak with extras and they did the vinyl. In the same year Marquee Records also released a remastered 'slipcase' version. Both had 13 tracks but I don't know why two labels released it in the same year.

So I just had this thought brought on by a post on FB from Anthrax. They are celebrating 5 million views of the 'official' clip for Devil You Know. If a band has 5 million listens to a track on Spotify they get $16,000 (based on 2020 figures) and on Apple Music they get $28,000. Figures will vary given the many circumstances that these platforms throw down and sure it could be argued that a band deserves more, but with 5 million views on YT they aren't even getting paid a cent are they? Doesn't a video have to garner 10 million views or something before YT starts paying? If so doesn't that make YT where things are 'officially' released without the complaints, less worthy than the streaming channels for these popular bands?

Edit: Actually YT is not 10 million. It's lower but relies on multiple factors from running ad programs to number of subscribers to number of click through, even down to the video length.

Still doesn't make it an easy calculation to compare all platforms and newer bands will struggle more because it's not quick cash, but it does seem to me while more and more bands accept YT as the way to get videos out there YT is screwing them over just as much as streaming services are.

I think I just got a headache :tickled:. It does sound like Youtube is the biggest ripoff. But I have really only heard them talk about Spotify. Is Spotify strictly a pay service aside from from free trials?

I didn't know about the other label, that is weird. I'm actually not sure how remastered it is. The drums are very muddy. Like they came straight off of a cassette rip. Check that. It does say it's remastered by someone I've never heard of.

Holy shit man I have never heard anything like this where the vocals are so all over the place! It's Slayerish then it's clean then he's singing then he's talking then he's wailing then he's screaming and then death metaly. With some hardcore and punk style delivery. All in one song! Hard to get a handle on them!

Edit: also throw in some Baloff and Zetro.

Yeah I gave myself one too. I don't really know what the biggest rip off actually is but I'm just surprised YT doesn't cop more flak.
It's not a pay only system, you can in fact use Spotify, Deezer and a few more (not sure about Apple) for free with any email address. I believe the only limitation is that if you don't pay for a subscription you get ads that can't be skipped every 10 mins or so and that with a paid service you can download each song.

YT downloaders and YT to mp3/flac converters have been made for years for just about every browser and they are free. Downloading from streaming services, while not impossible is a bit harder and often requires a paid program. So theoretically Spotify etc could pay more to the artists than YT because it's harder to download the song. But like who pays more I think it would be near impossible to figure out who helps piracy more. However I do think it's fair to suggest that YT are really not that much different to streaming services, just that their reputation seems to be better.

Considering Anacarusis have pretty much controlled their own catalogue for the last 20 years and released everything free on the net you have to wonder how much any record label made from the re-releases. I know they played a few shows to support the re-releases but Anacrusis have never been a band to tour or sell their music hard. I would suspect the Metal Blade remasters have at least come from that the label owned. No idea where the almost unknown label would have got their from though.

Yeah they were often labelled as 'experimental' because while they predominantly played thrash they didn't really stick to the norm. I've always loved their variety and how they can change things. They aren't a great band if you're in a mood and only one style will do. :)

If they handed out awards for best metal journalism surely it would have to once again go to Blabbermouth.
The headline:
Will SLAYER Ever Reunite For A Show Or Tour? GARY HOLT Responds

The first line of the article
Gary Holt says that he doesn't know if there will ever be a SLAYER reunion.

Where have I seen or heard Gary say that before? Oh yeah! In every fucking interview for the last 2 years.

I just so all over the place it's hard to tell if I like it or not lol. I mean. I do like it, but I'm not sure if I love it or not. I need way more listens to nail it down. The sound of the drums do hold the whole thing back I think.
