i like to think i have a pretty decent techique...but i don't alternate pick low chugging riffs
the whole point of a low chugging riff is the low end, which gets easily obscured when you're up-picking your power chords so the high note comes first...you should work on this, your producer will thank you later

Not all riffs that you could downpick are straight up powerchords. From what I remember, a lot of metallica riffs you could alt pick and it wouldnt make much of a difference. Actually its easier on some of them...James is the downpicking wonder though....
I'm not saying that you should alt pick slow riffs. I just think its rediculous to say alt picking a slow riff is retarded.

my point is, that just because something is considered 'good form' on a technical level doesn't mean it always sounds right...your example was a good one, there's a reason why practically NO ONE can play metallica riffs like hetfield

Hetfield rules. He inspired me to riff completly downpicked when possible and I think I sound tons better from it. I'm going to try to stay out of the argument but basically, Straight downpicking and alternate picking all have there place. The bottom line is, if it sounds good and you aren't hurting yourself, it's the right thing to do.
