Thoughts on Mackie HR824 monitors?

Yeah, you're right, but I guess 824's is still very good upgrade from MR8's, especially if they are mark1 for $400.

Sure, and I know some engineers who have worked for years with them and are completely happy. Last I checked, Kippo still uses them.
