Tone/Tuning Issues.

I'll try to explain this as simply as I can.

I offered to mix for a band from Australia, and I'm from the US. Basically they sent me DI guitars and bass, and 1 (yes only 1) track of drums, recorded on a cheap electronic set.

Basically, all the recordings were unusable, or just plain awful in general. So they sent me the tab and I recorded everything myself.

The problem I have is that the song is in Drop A, and my guitar was setup to Drop C, and bass setup to Standard E. The recordings aren't "awful" but they just aren't good enough, and I need some tips and tricks or just someone to tells me that there's nothing else I can do.

How can I make this mix better?

I'm really new to mixing, so go easy on me...

If they're getting you do the mix, I would buy some stupid heavy gauge strings and tune down. Same with the bass.

Obviously I'm not part of the band but it seems like this probably wont get them the "heavy" they're looking for. The mix sounds awkward with the rhythm guitars up an octave

The guitars are not up an octave, I literally tuned down. The problem I'm having is the mud. I get it, if your only advice is to buy stupidly big strings. But this is in drop A
