Yeah... In my old band we had a couple of 7 string songs in B Standard. I had to up the mids and dump the bass a LOT more than usual to be heard, but I was still heard very well.
Too all guitarists!

I play with drop-D on all my own songs, when playing other bands stuff, it's usually standard E though
Yeah, I think you're right about the last few but I'm not sure with the latest - guitar sound isn't very heavy.
Amon Amarth are playing in B, so I have to retract pretty much everything I've said in this thread. I feel like a dumbass.
Still, they mostly do tremolo picking melodies - virtually no open E stuff, so you don't really hear the full heaviness of it being in B. They could play in C if they wanted to, probably...

most of the time i'm in down a whole step D standard, i still play E standard from time to time. i also have trying out C# standard lately.

It is quite hard to pick a "favorite tuning" when you consider the fact that it just depends on what key you are writing in... And just as well you can play just a heavy in Standard as you can in B, C#, D, C, or even Eb... It's all how you write the music to be quite honest and what kind of range you want on your instrument in.
For instance my band plays mostly in D. And our lead guitarist wanted to start tuning in B. with a standard 6 string, jackson Warrior. I told him it was a stupid idea because he could just as easily get a 7 string guitar and have it sound the same, or even better. And to tune that low on that E string, which has a different gauge than the low B that a seven string guitar has, it just makes the E string floppy and it sounds like crap...
but I digress, my favorite is Standard.

B tuning sounds great for me. I have used C and B tunings almostexclusively for 4 or 5 years now and have no problems cutting through with my low notes. I dont play through anything special. h-400 LTD and Engl Powerball with Ge7 pedal so i can boost the mids and highs where appropriate. The low end sound is awesome until live rehearsals with a full band...then as expected it gets lost in the mix.

On my Jackson: Standard Tuning
On my squier/strat like guitar: C standard, frequently Eb and sometimes D standard (for Death) and very infrequently Standard Tuning, sometimes Drop D also.
But I really just write songs and stuff in Standard and go down if I want to cover a song.

I don't understand this "B is muddy" thing. Meshuggah play 8 string guitars and you can definitely hear each stroke of the pick.
B does sound muddy if all you do is hold the E minor position and tremolo pick...duh. But then that means you suck at songwriting.
B is not supposed to sound thrashy; on the contrary, it's supposed to be crushingly heavy. If you want to play speed and thrash metal, don't tune below D unless you're playing crunchy, all down picked riffs.

Depends if i'm playing songs by my favourite bands, or if i'm writing.
If i'm playing songs by bands i tune to what they tuned to on the recording, if i'm writing my thrash stuff i play in E standard, if i'm writing for my old school death metal band i play in D open, which is every string tuned down one step to DGCFAD i think.
