Took a shot at mixing the tone competition song

Cool little effect in the beginning, dude.

The mix is pretty good. You definitely overcompressed the drum/bass submix to death though. Those cymbals are eating the mix.

The guitars sound pretty cool, but they are a bit shrill.

Give it another shot!

Just sit back and listen to the raw drums vs. the drums you used compression on. Solo the drums only and listen to the cymbal attack. A ride cymbal never sounds that BLAM-ey in real life. Unless you are aiming for that smashed sound, try to figure out how to maximize your loudness without slamming the cymbals. Something like GCLIP and a good limiter could help if you use it carefully. Believe it or not, in this case, a multiband compressor may help you a lot to pump up the low end and low mids while leaving the cymbal attack untouched.

i see what your saying. I left the backing track alone so the compressed cymbal sound is due to the compression on my master bus. Ill have to toy with it some more. thanks for responding!
