1.Enslaved - Vertebrae (amazing blend of Prog/Black/Psychedelic Metal, definitely my #1 of the year!)

2.Bloodbath - The Fathomless Mastery (Crushing old school style death metal featuring the man himself Mikael Åkerfeldt)

3.Protest the Hero - Fortress (Progressive math/metalcore at it's best!)

4.The Human Abstract - Midheaven (This album was a total 180 from their previous release, much more progressive and unexpected)

5.Opeth - Watershed (It's Opeth, what can I say? I don't think they could ever go wrong)

6.ColdWorld - Melancholie² (This album is beautiful, it has the perfect atmosphere for a rainy night. If you enjoy atmospheric/depressive black metal definitely check this out!)

7.Nachtmystium - Assassins: Black Meddle Pt. 1 (Another band that does the psychedelic black metal thing, but not quite up to the level as Enslaved. I give these guys major props since they are from my hometown of Chicago. They definitely put on a sick live show.)

8.The Faceless - Planetary Duality (Technical/Progressive Death metal at it's finest)

9.Fuck the Facts - Disgorge Mexico (FTF will grind your head off, nuff said.)

10.Benea Reach - Alleviat (Another great progressive Math/Metalcore release)

Now tell me yours!

I am probably in the minority when I say I feel last year was better. I have an incomplete list as I spent most of this year trying to catch up with older stuff I missed at the time. This will not be metal-only. A shame I'm sure, but this is what I have to offer:

1. Nine Inch Nails - The Slip (listened to it a ton, really liked it and got one of the limited edition physical releases)

2. The Killers - Day & Age (Love-or-Hate album and I love the Killers. Produced fluffy pop, but done at its best IMO)

3. Gojira - The Way of All Flesh (For me, tied for metal album of the year with Watershed. Its like From Mars to Sirius except better and I love the lyrical themes of this release even more)

4. Opeth - Watershed (Good Opeth, great songs, wasn't as crazy for the overall feel for this album but its tasty and good Prog)

5. The Mars Volta - The Bedlam in Goliath (back to form IMO, still not as good as Francis or De-Loused but still good, better than Amputechture).

I'll make a note that I didn't get around to an in-depth listen of Vertebrae but I think it would crack my list. I am working on it ASAP. Also the same goes for Protest the Hero, but they'd need a hell of an album to overtake Colors in my heart.

Halfway there, and in really no particular order. I don't have a ton of superlatives for this year. I'm not trying to be a "Debbie Downer" but when I thought about it, its been a great year for music for me in general, but not necessarily new albums.

I'll also throw out Keep of Kalessin's Colossus, Porcupine Tree's Nil Recurring (which came out in the USA, when I obviously was able to get it in 2008 though technically first released in Sept 2007, whatever) and Between the Buried and Me's Colors Live.

Amon Amarth - Twilight of the Thunder God
Agalloch - The White
Equilibrium - Sagas
Opeth - Watershed
Swallow the Sun - Plague of Butterflies
Enslaved - Vertebrae
Korpiklaani - Korven Kuningas

All-in-all, I wasn't that impressed with 2008.
I haven't listened to the new Moonsorrow or Eluveitie albums yet either, but I'm sure they're both fantastic and should probably be on this list.

The ones in bold shouldn't be in the list, they're EPs, not albums. Yes, Moonsorrow's is about 68 minutes long, but it's still an EP :p .

Pfft. Technicalities.

Ironically according to the "official" definition given by wikipedia, all the of bold albums count as albums, so list away. I think its semantical, LP or EP is a designation of length but they are still collections of songs and therefore an album in my eyes and they should count. This differs from a single (obviously one song).

Here's the "official" definition of an album: "According to the rules of the UK Charts, a recording counts as an "album" if either it has more than four tracks or lasts more than 25 minutes."

Well, LP would be the format, not the length itself.

For me an album has to be at least 35 minutes. And well, both bands state that they're EPs. Also, Moonsorrow's has "For Whom The Bell Tolls" as the second track…. I highly doubt the band (or anyone, to be honest) will personally think of that release as an album. And Agalloch's says on the cover: The White EP.

Couldn't be clearer.

LP and EP haven't been relevant to physical formats since vinyl records were dominant 30 years ago. They are formats as far as the length of the album, but its still an album at its base. Its semantics and you want to be right, but at the very least acknowledge the fact that you're going by your own definition and not the legitimate one - I certainly am (utilizing my own definition).

Also according to the only legitimate definition I could find on wikipedia all of those albums satisfy the length requirement to be considered an album. IMO that's what matters if I'm being objective, not if the total amount of tracks are short (as it says OR, not and).
