top 10 albums of the 80s?

Yeah, I won't deny that Bathory is one of metal's most important bands, but the vast majority of metal's most important albums were released in the 80's. There's no Possessed, Death, Celtic Frost, etc in this thread yet either. 80's Bathory was sloppier/kvlt and as a result more a case where most appreciate the significance but don't look forward to each listen as masterpieces of metal.

Reign in Blood had sort of a U-shape thing going for it. Every time I see a "Best song?"-type poll for the album, I see Epidemic and Reborn and think "Wait... how do those ones go?" (srsly, I had to check Wikipedia to remember the titles just now).

Well, Under the Sign of the Black Mark would definitely be in my list along with Reign in Blood. Then probably Ride the Lightning and Altars of Madness and then idk after that. I'm not that into the 80s as I liked the emergence of more black/death in the 90s and bands like Sabbath, Zeppelin, King Crimson, or Pink Floyd for rock/heavy metal in the 70s. 80s seems like an era for the classic rock/new wave of british heavy metal fans.

It's amazing to look at the beginning of 80s metal, then look at the last couple of years of 80s metal. I mean at first, we had bands like Iron Maiden, and Venom, then at the end we had really extreme shit like Morbid Angel, and Mayhem.

Well the 80's was something indeed, but actually I guess all decades has its moments in rock'n'roll. During the 60's it started still with Elvis and by the end it was Woodstock, the 70's started with Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple and ended with with the coming of NWOBHM.

And if someone checks the 80's more closely while NWOBHM was peaking the first wave (1983), Metallica was already coming with the debut, and by the time Megadeth was coming with their debut (1985) also Sepultura released "Bestial Devastation", Possessed "Seven Churches" and Helloween "Helloween (EP)". My point is that a lot of sounds started to show overlapping to the existant one, but many at the time didn't noticed immediately. Today with Internet it's easier IMO to discover new sounds and bands faster than it was 25-30 years ago.

it says metal albums of the 80's. some of us have been pushing the envelope with hard rock bands passing them as metal but dylan, zappa and REM aren't close to metal and i love those artists

10 completely different bands/albums than my first top 10.

I think that's the whole idea of the thread in a way, to see how different people perceived the same era. Some people tends to mention albums just because it's a must be or because everybody quote them. I prefer that everybody be true to themselves and write from the heart :kickass:
