In no order:
Revelation - For the Sake of No One
I really do not believe this is better than Release, but in an excellent year for Doom, this still stood out. Brenner and Co. still amaze with their quality AND quantity of releases. PS - Accumulus is still my favorite.
Asphyx - Death...The Brutal Way
Holy shit I didn't expect this. It's like Asphyx just stepped right back into the early 90's. This is the spiritual follow-up to Last One on Earth. Best reunion album thus far.
Drudkh - Microcosmos
I'm one of the few that got tired of Blood in Our Wells and almost ignored Estrangment. Despite apparent hipster love (according to this forum), Microcosmos is really a grand listen.
Pelican - What We All Come to Need
Their best since Australasia. I know that's not saying much, but the band finally is starting to forget those stupid post-rock Explosions in the Sky faggotry-isms and growing their balls back. And the final song (their first with vocals) is amazing.
Jesu - Infinity
A fine return to the harsher sounds of the early material. It does drag at times, but a 50 minute song will tend to have sub-par moments. I love all Jesu's stuff, and understand why many people left the band behind, but this one is for everybody.
Devin Townsend Project - Addicted
The best thing since Terria, and I enjoyed Accelerated Evolution. Catchy stuff. The addition of female vocals from the ex-The Gathering chick worked surprisingly well.
Memory Driven - Relative Obscurity
The dark horse of 2009 for me. I didn't expect much from this, and I really don't remember why I bought it. It has some doom traits, but is really a solid slab of hard rock/metal with synths thrown in for effect.
Church of Misery - Houses of the Unholy
You can't fuck with The Church. These Japs have been cranking out doom monoliths with a stoner vibe about serial killers for about 10 years, and I love 'em for it.
Slough Feg - Ape Uprising!
I'm gonna let the cat out of the bag: I like the last three albums more than the first three. Traveller is their best though. The direction the band is taking reminds me of my youth, and to an older fucker like me, that's important.
Griftegard - Solemn.Sacred.Severe
I was late on this one, but the constant comparisons to Warning and Rev Biz convinced me. A solid album of doom, nothing less. The piano piece is especially moving.
Honorable Mentions:
Jesu - Opiate Sun
The Gates of Slumber - Hymns of Blood and Thunder
Devin Townsend Project - Ki
Fairyland - Score to a New Beginning
While Heaven Wept - Vast Oceans Lachrymose
Count Raven - Mammon's War (another great reunion album)
Argus - Argus
Iron Man - I have Returned
The Chasm - Farseeing the Paranormal Abysm
Against Nature - Action at a Distance/The First Rain (I hate prog, but love this)
Most Disappointing album of 2009:
Graveland - Spears of Heaven
After a long string of good to fantastic to utter classic albums, Darken hit a rut and released a dud. Easily the worst full length in the entire catalogue.
