top 10 of 2009

i'm so behind on music these days that i will be able to make my 2009 top 10 around 2012 or something

Gorgoroth - Quantos Possunt ad Satanitatem Trahunt
Blut aus Nord - Memoria Vetusta II: Dialogue with the Stars
Drudkh - Microcosmos
Wolves in the Throne Room - Black Cascade

maudlin of the Well - Part The Second
Darren Johnston - The Edge Of The Forest
Keelhaul - Keelhaul's Triumphant Return To Obscurity
DM Stith - Heavy Ghost
Dave Douglas - Spirit Moves
Uri Gurvich - The Storyteller
Griftegard - Solemn.Sacred.Severe.
Wobbler - Afterglow
Vijay Iyer - Historicity
Umphrey's McGee - Mantis

...as of now, i guess.
.

In no order:

Revelation - For the Sake of No One
I really do not believe this is better than Release, but in an excellent year for Doom, this still stood out. Brenner and Co. still amaze with their quality AND quantity of releases. PS - Accumulus is still my favorite.

Asphyx - Death...The Brutal Way
Holy shit I didn't expect this. It's like Asphyx just stepped right back into the early 90's. This is the spiritual follow-up to Last One on Earth. Best reunion album thus far.

Drudkh - Microcosmos
I'm one of the few that got tired of Blood in Our Wells and almost ignored Estrangment. Despite apparent hipster love (according to this forum), Microcosmos is really a grand listen.

Pelican - What We All Come to Need
Their best since Australasia. I know that's not saying much, but the band finally is starting to forget those stupid post-rock Explosions in the Sky faggotry-isms and growing their balls back. And the final song (their first with vocals) is amazing.

Jesu - Infinity
A fine return to the harsher sounds of the early material. It does drag at times, but a 50 minute song will tend to have sub-par moments. I love all Jesu's stuff, and understand why many people left the band behind, but this one is for everybody.

Devin Townsend Project - Addicted
The best thing since Terria, and I enjoyed Accelerated Evolution. Catchy stuff. The addition of female vocals from the ex-The Gathering chick worked surprisingly well.

Memory Driven - Relative Obscurity
The dark horse of 2009 for me. I didn't expect much from this, and I really don't remember why I bought it. It has some doom traits, but is really a solid slab of hard rock/metal with synths thrown in for effect.

Church of Misery - Houses of the Unholy
You can't fuck with The Church. These Japs have been cranking out doom monoliths with a stoner vibe about serial killers for about 10 years, and I love 'em for it.

Slough Feg - Ape Uprising!
I'm gonna let the cat out of the bag: I like the last three albums more than the first three. Traveller is their best though. The direction the band is taking reminds me of my youth, and to an older fucker like me, that's important.

Griftegard - Solemn.Sacred.Severe
I was late on this one, but the constant comparisons to Warning and Rev Biz convinced me. A solid album of doom, nothing less. The piano piece is especially moving.

Honorable Mentions:

Jesu - Opiate Sun
The Gates of Slumber - Hymns of Blood and Thunder
Devin Townsend Project - Ki
Fairyland - Score to a New Beginning
While Heaven Wept - Vast Oceans Lachrymose
Count Raven - Mammon's War (another great reunion album)
Argus - Argus
Iron Man - I have Returned
The Chasm - Farseeing the Paranormal Abysm
Against Nature - Action at a Distance/The First Rain (I hate prog, but love this)

Most Disappointing album of 2009:

Graveland - Spears of Heaven
After a long string of good to fantastic to utter classic albums, Darken hit a rut and released a dud. Easily the worst full length in the entire catalogue.

Maudlin Of The Well
Grizzly Bear

......

the rest.

And I've actually heard a decent # of 2009 albums.*

*that Drudkh album is boring as fvck

Stop fearing metal!

I agree on the Drudkh album though. I have no desire to listen to it as a whole at this point anymore, though I maintain the fact that Ars Poetica is a brilliant song.

Thanks for posting something worth looking at in this thread.

I heard some clips from Jesu - Infinity before it came out but haven't heard the whole thing. That is partly because those clips did nothing for me.

However, I'm listening to this Opiate Sun for the first time and wow, I'm really digging this shit. I'm a wee bit enthralled by this opening track. I hope the next three are as good. If so, we might have a new second place after Silver.

Infinity is amazing. Especially the repetitive yet strangely addicting second half.

I forgot about AMorphis - Skyforger, which probably would beat out someone in the top 10. THat Joutsen guy has put so much energy into a band that i really had written off

J., I had no ideayou were such a Doom fan.

For about 2 years now, after I traded for some Rev Biz albums. Then swizzle, Doomcifer and Dodens helped me out.

And how did Fairlyland slip into your Top releases?

Zod

Ive always been a sucker for some cheesy pomp done in a tasteful manner. hell, i like bal sagoth and ensiferum. i like the second fairyland album more, but the new one is good.

I tried listening to the Motw again; it's certainly less exciting than the two first Kayo Dot releases, which had their moments of genius and... well, less genius. Regardless, it didn't do anything for me.

The only 2009 release I liked/listened to was "Deadend" from Domenico Solazzo :

http://domenicosolazzo.blogspot.com/2008/12/deadend-lap0816.html

I never heard a lick of Kayo Dot, but if their material is a step up from this MOTW release (my first and only experience with these pinkish gimps) then I'd certainly be in for a treat. The lack of a tangible release is responsible for this top notch material evading my memory bank. I'd certainly cram it somewhere in the top ten and I have since kept my eyes out for their back catalogue to snag on the cheap. Their albums seem to go for $30-$40 on ebay, may have to pay the piper and snag them regardless of which.
