Top 10 Progressive Metal releases

I don't see how Elegy isn't progressive metal. I mean sure it isn't PROG. METAL in that it doesn't rip off Dream Theater but in that case I'd have no business listing half the bands I mentioned.

The guitar work in Elegy is ANYTHING but death metal and it doesn't fit anywhere else really so - progressive metal by default I suppose.

Actually most non-metal prog bands are better. Better quality musicianship and less gay shit. Most metal bands have that mentality that they have prove something when playing progressive music instead of just letting it flow.

Well it's useless to talk with you if you just quote this very commun idea of progressive metal. And I could easily find some prog rock bands who are demonstrative too.

Anyway, I don't listen to prog metal very much anymore.

hmmmm... this thread reminds me of why i don't like prog metal... let Rush and King Crimson do the prog mates and just stick with riffs and stop noodling around! :kickass:

Genres aren't opinions.

Oh, bullshit. In today's world of metal, it's more opinion than ever. There's so much genre blending and switching and border-jumping in order to claim originality. I'm sorry man, but I don't totally buy that genres aren't opinions.

That said, I admit that you are right about Pyramaze. I went back and listened more closely to those albums, and there's not enough "prog" moments to include them in the genre (in my opinion...:Smug:)

All I'm saying is that it's becoming harder and harder to classify bands nowadays. I really think that people can disagree on the primary genre of a band. I mean, look how many people disagree on these boards all the time.

Just because a bunch of people are flat out wrong means nothing. It isn't hard to classify bands correctly if you have a brain and comprehend what makes certain genres what they are...
