How can songwriting mean nothing? Nobody would give a damn how good anyone was if they couldnt back it up with songs, otherwise this poll would just be people like Chris Impellitiri who can play but not much else.

No im not, nobody cares about a guitarist who just sits there and plays scales (unless they were the first in a particular genre to push it to the limit like Malmsteen).

Spwany you are so fucking stupid sometimes!!! NOBODY IS SAYING SONGWRITING MEANS NOTHING. WE ARE SAYING IT ISN'T RELATED TO THIS POLL!

Lots of lead guitarists are hired by bands to PLAY on the albums but not really write, doesn't make them any less a good guitarist because they don't write songs. And it has nothing to do with sitting there playing scales. You could do a really simple easy catchy guitar solo and its good, but that isn't songwriting still, it's writing a guitar solo but it isn't songwriting.

How can it not be related to this poll when just about every single person on it would be utterly irrelevent without the songs? Where did you hear them playing? Thats right, on the songs.

Because alot of them didn't write the songs dickhead!!! Alot of guitarists are hired by bands to PLAY but not write.

Example: Megadeth. Dave Mustaine did nearly all the writing and Marty Friedman did fuck all writing... Dave is obviously a far better writer than Marty Friedman. Who is a better guitarist though? Marty Friedman....

The bottom line is, guitar playing and songwriting are two different talents and this poll is about the guitar playing talent, not the songwriting talent.

It's like talking to a brick wall sometimes with you Spawny. You fail to see the most obvious things and totally miss the point of everything because you get so stuck on one little point you wanna make and block out what we're actually talking about lol.

Marty wrote some great stuff in Megadeth, so he really wasnt the best example you could have chosen Troops :)

If its about guitar playing, then why is nearly everyone from metal bands? Surely we would all be appreciating Robert Johnson and B.B. King instead of Ace "what year is it again?" Frehley. But its not just about guitar playing ability, its about the songs they played on too.

I see your point. I put a whole bunch of non-metal players in the preliminaries, but no one voted for them (including you). So due to the audience of the poll, the players are going to be ones that feature in the music most of us listen to the most. It only makes sense. On a non-metal board, a whole bunch of guys who are getting all the votes here, and who are super guitarists, wouldn't have even been mentioned, but guys like Cobain and Dave Grohl would be scoring huge.

Adrian Smith is going to be Number One, anyway. He's a guitarist and a songwriter, so stop arguing.

What if it was drummers we were talking about? Nicko's a decent drummer, but he's only written one song to appear on a Maiden album. So, he's not a songwriter but he IS a good drummer. Yeah?

But we're talking about guitarists here, hey... umm...

Spawn is just silly. He's just trying to make a point that songwriting is more important than guitar playing... and I think everybody knows it is anyway so he doesn't even really have to make that point.

And it really has nothing to do with a GUITARIST poll. If a poll for best guitarists was about songwriting, then that would mean a poll for singing talent and drumming talent would have to be about songwriting as well. How many drummers write songs? How is being a guitarist any different?

And Spawn, about the Marty Friedman example... I know Marty did some writing in Megadeth but my point was that Dave is a BETTER writer... but it doesn't make him a better guitarist.
