Top Ten Melodic Death Metal Albums

Neh...it's not all that close. The musical style is pretty different. Harsh vocals and guitar melodies, yes, but the musical structure of said melodies is way different.

I described Bodom and Kalmah as "melodic power metal with harsh vocals" not too long ago and somebody jumped on my ass about it. I'm with WeAreInFlames though, I don't think think they have that much in common with melo-death, now that melo-death and melodic death metal are so much different.

it seems similar at first because there are elements - heavy guitars, dual guitar melodies, harsh vocals, and so on - that they share. However, if you look at it it's different. The melodies of power metal are more...fruity. Melodic death melodies are more aggressive and classically influenced, in general. Melodeath vocals are rooted in death growls, while Bodom style stuff is rooted in just screaming like a dumbfuck. Etc, etc...

A lot of bands mentioned in this thread sound like power metal bands with raspy vocals. I can't recall death metal sounding anything like power metal.

Yeah, they're obviously not death metal but it's borderline and not stylistically far from In Flames or Dark Tranquillity. I figured if people were including The Jester Race, Mithotyn can be counted too.

SURPRISE THAT'S BASICALLY WHAT MELO-DEATH IS! Though it is further from power metal (more rhythmic/thrashier beats/riff structures) than stuff like CoB.
