As of late I have been in a big traditional metal kick. It seems that it is a genre that gets really over looked. Right now I am loving Metal Inquisitor. While having a very generic name and generic looking album covers doesnt do the music justice. Holy smokes, anyone who hasnt listened to them, go look them up. Great 80's metal sound. I hate saying this but kinda like Maiden. Just great catchy stuff with great leads and very impressive vocals.
Some others worth checking out.....

Enforcer "Into The Night", while this one may ring soon of hipster all over it. Very great retro traditional speed / true metal. I can totally see these guys getting a big following. The first pressing sold out real quick and the label had to repress just to fufill orders for it. Kind of have that Wolf vibe.

Crystal Viper.... damn, forget Nightwish, Epica, Within Temptation....Marta Gabriel is one hell of a powerful singer. Great high vocals without sounding girly. This band knows how to right great songs. They have a new CD coming out soon...not soon enough. This is one of my most eagerly awaited disc this year.

Airged L'amh - this was a total impulse buy. It was worth every penny. While thier album covers kind of reek of chessy power metal. What lies withing is something so much more. Every track gets the blood pumping. Pure true metal in the Manowar vien without being silly.

It seems that bands in this genre get over looked for some reason. Bands such as Pharoh, Twisted Tower Dire, Sacred Blood, Gothic Knights, Cresant Sheild, and Battleroar seem to never get the love that they deserve. Anyone here a fan or want to suggest some bands....???

Helstar's new album 'The King of Hell' kicks all manner of ass! If you haven't picked that one up yet (Diabolik) do so. You will not be disappointed. :kickass:

also along the same lines was the latest album from Vicious Rumors: Warball. It's a great one too. Not a bad song included, and several that will make even the long time VR fan sit up and take notice. The vocals by James Rivera certainly sets it apart from previous albums. And looking forward to the next one.

more later...

I go to Sentinel Steel Records to fimd this type of stuff . Dennis Gulbey runs onw the best distros for this type of stuff. You'll find some real obscure stuff like: Heavy Load, Angus, Blacklace, and this list goes on.

I always check out Sentinel Steel every few months...I am lucky enough to live like 20 minutes walking from Metal Haven so finding CD's isnt a big worry for me.

I was never a fan of Seven Witches no Helstar. They never clicked with me. Same goes for Jag Panzer. Seen them live like 3 times and they never did anything for me.

Dibolik - the first two Seven Witches cd's were great, featuring Bobby 'Leatherlungs' Lucas on vocals. The songwriting was a bit more solid and heavy (IMHO) than later releases. Great classic metal in the modern era. Speaking of 'Leatherlungs', he went on to record an album with the reunited Overlorde about 4 years ago. That album is great also! Bobby is currently fronting an Iron Maiden tribute act in the New Jersey/NYC area called Sanctuary

oh and hey, even though I have yet to order anything by this band... I've recently discovered WOLF, who certainly have that old-school metal sound.

now I just need to go check out some of those mentioned by others in this thread I've never (or else barely) heard of in the past. Thanks for the recommendations.

I know this guy.
He dislikes 80's US traditional metal, for some reason.

Anyhow......some mandatory trad metal listening:
Manilla Road - Crystal Logic
Jag Panzer - Ample Destruction
Angel Witch - S/T
Accept - Restless and Wild
Pentagram - any of the First Daze Here collections
Pagan Altar - Lords of Hypocrisy

I know many here dislike doom, but Pentragram and Pagan Altar are as much trad metal as they are doom.

I like all Seven Witches, up until Rivera left.

As far as newer bands, you can't touch Twisted Tower Dire or Wolf (Sweden) They both own big time!

I'd love for more traditional metal bands to play ProgPower, but it seems that whenever one DOES play, they get crapped on by the fans:

Jag Panzer
Onward
Steel Prophet
Rage
Virgin Steele

... to name a few.

Dude, yes, you are right some awesome bands there in your list.

I recomment Brocas Helm, Ironsword, and the almighty Lord Weird Slough Feg to anyone who hasn't experienced these bands.

I had the new Ironsword disc in my hands a few weeks ago, but I had like 5 other disc so I put back. Sold out then. I really want to get it though.

Slough Feg are really good. Very intense live too.

I have read good things about Brocas Helm...will look into them more.

Another great trad metal band from the late 80's is SQUADRON from Chicago.

I have mentioned them here before.

I have a dub copy somewhere of their demo FATAL STRIKE which was reissued by a small label in the 90s, though just as hard to find.

Of interest to some here is that their one-time bassist is currently in Mindwarp Chamber.

I saw these guys one time in the late 80s at a suburban club. Very Maiden-ish, vocally and musically.

I forgot a few: I would hope you guys listen to Omen. There's also a band from Italy called Wotan that I enjoy...at least the album Carmina Barbarica. Worth at least checking out their myspace page. Cool band.
