Travelling for Progpower

flying out Thurs. nite at 8pm arrival 5 am friday (what was I thinking!!!???!!) about 2987 miles from Los Angeles to Atlanta. First ProgPower for me and I'm so excited to be able to finally meet the guys from Symphorce and for sure cannot wait to meet and party with you crazy metal monsters! :hotjump:

My schedule:

Look at clock at about 4:45 PM. Decide it is time to leave. Arrive at about 5:10. Look at vendors, make way to floor. Enjoy. At night, I just go back home.

I love living so close to it... :)

I admire everyone traveling though, I know if it were to move, I would be one of you guys!

Does anyone live closer than eight miles? (Last year there were a couple of attendees from Georgia Tech, which is a walk -- albeit a long one -- from the venue).

But NOTHING beats Neil G. riding his bike down from Chicago, for ProgPower IV. That dude will live on in fame for his insanity. :)
Wow, thanks for keeping the legend alive! As I scrolled down through all the messages with people talking about how difficult a *car* ride to ProgPower is, I thought I was going have to post to suggest that they try the truly "metal" method of transportation, namely, a 2200-mile bicycle ride. But since you already mentioned it, now I won't have to. (oh, whoops, did I anyway?) Preparation-H, my ass! :D

If ya got time, make sure you ride "the Dragon" at Deal's Gap just south of Knoxville...318 curves in 11 miles (www.tailofthedragon.com).
Damn, I wish I had seen this site before my ride down there. I had planned to ride US129, even though I only learned of its legendary status upon reaching the area. But I had just done a brutal 1800 foot climb out of Maryville, and then when I reached 129, I assumed I was going to be in for more of the same ass-whooping for the next 30 miles, so I didn't have the balls to continue that way. But now looking at the elevation map at that site, it doesn't look bad at all, especially going south; I'm sure I could have handled it. I guess I should have realized that it's so curvy to *avoid* the hills, not because its full of switchbacks.

Anyway, yeah, it's a beautiful area, and I sure saw tons of motorcycles. I'll be jealous of your trip! http://www.gregie.com/neil/bike/tour/day10.htm

Oh well, maybe I'll hit it on the way ProgPower X or something, because I think I'm flying this year!

Neil

OK now I'm jealous. a BIKE?!? Are you freakin' kidding me? I'm issuing a challenge: My buddies and I will pay for beer, food, and hotel for the ENTIRE weekend for anyone who arrives in Atlanta from some out of town destination by pogostick. This is sure to attract hundreds of participants, so I'm going to have to limit it to one winner, whoever travels the farthest... Any takers? E-mail me for contest rules.....

Shouldn't that be on a PROG-O-STICK?!?!?!? :tickled:

YAY.

Me and two others will be driving from Ft Lauderdale, Florida. Takes about 10 hours. Last year we drove up thru Ivan.

I love to drive, so the trip is a vacation all by itself.

I read that earlier post and thought "Cool, someone rode their motorcycle down to ProgPower...that'd be brutal, especially through rain and a hurricane...."

Now at last, I begin to see.

I am in awe. :OMG: :tickled:

12-1/2 hours, 700 miles exactly, from Detroit Rawk City, with a full boat of four metalheads.

My stereo is gonna love me.

Well, unless we need to fly. Depends on how my brother does with chemo.

I'm 18 miles from DTW. I'll drive there and fly down, thanks. ;)

First I drive 2 hours Wednesday night to Harrisonburg, VA to meet up with my bud Glenn(not Harveston), then we leave around 5:30 Thursday morning for the 10 hour drive down to Atlanta.

I MUCH prefer the driving to the flying. Flying has become such a wholly unpleasant experience post 9/11. I really don't even consider it anymore, though I DID fly down for PPII, which was only 2 months AFTER 9/11, but before they instituted all the hideous(and completely ineffective) security measures.

I'm getting so excited just thinking about the trip.

Its only an 1 hour 20 minute flight from O'hare to Heartsfield. I did it last sunday much to my chagrine, then I had to fly the long flight to SF from Atlanta. Bad scheduling on my part oh well c'est la vie.

Bear

Damn that's shitty to fly all the way to Atlanta to have to go to SF... I've flown down there a few times for other reasons than Progpower, a lot easier than the 12 hour drive..which wasn't bad going down but coming back home it was a bitch.

I'll be flying in from Spokane, WA just like the last 3 years. I would actually prefer to drive. A nice, leisurly cruise across the country would be fun and relaxing. Unfortunately I can't take that much time off work. Oh-well... Maybe one of these years I'll be able to.

That brings me some great memories :) Would be cool to get to do that again with you guys! Heheh I just remembered getting a beer from the fridge around the abovementioned time of the morning and hearing something like "What?? A beer at 5am?? Oh yeah.. you europeans!"

Last two years I have started my PP travelling from central Finland (Kuopio and Jyväskylä). First a bus or taxi to the train station, then a couple of trains totalling close to 4 hours to go to Helsinki, then a bus to the airport, a 2 hour flight to Copenhagen, 3 hour stopover there and then a 9 hour transatlantic flight to Washington DC, a couple of hours drive to friend's place in VA and then after resting a couple of days a 8-9 hour roadtrip to Atlanta.. luckily I like travelling :) Would love to do it again.

Well this way you get to take a lighter with you! :tickled: just heard no lighters on airplanes anymore....hmmmmm guess I'll have to take matches. What sense does that new rule make anyway?!?!?!

They don't want anybody lighting the Nike C4's up on the plane. You do get to carry up to 4 books of matches though. What I don't get is that it can't even be on your checked baggage. I better be able to find a lighter in Heartsfiled Intl (for under $2!!!!).......

I guess I got it made. Without Traffic its like 15 minutes on the highway or 25 minutes doing the sideroads. I do travel long distances by car to see shows. I drove 7 and 1/2 hours last week to see Overkill and 10 hours to VA to see them and two years ago I drove 15 hours to NY to see Overkill.
