How would one die for metal anyway? Set yourself ablaze with sword in hand listening to Destroyer 666 on the white house lawn to make a political statment to raise the world awareness of heavy metal?

New Hampshire has the most metal slogan ever.

I used to think bands like Manowar and Rhapsody looked silly and played over the top music, now it just sounds like really awesome metal to me.

.

nah, not Rhapsody, not really. They're skilled musicians, sure enough though.

I agree about Manticora being a cool band, especially on stage.

A lot of what is deemed cheesy, if not everything, is just plain old fun that some of us have grown too killjoy to enjoy. Let's keep in mind that cheesy and crappy are way apart.

This said I still fail to see how "true" black metal is cheesy per se. Ridiculous on plenty of occurences yes, but not "cheesy". Whatever.

Yea I can see how people wouldnt like Rhapsody, certainly one of the more bombastic power metal bands in the scene. I'd almost call them Symphony metal as of late.
On a semi-related note, how the hell can someone claim to like classical music, then dismiss anything related to neo-classical/power metal as "gay, over the top wankery" ? I guess I missed the memo about how proficency with instrumentation is uncool now.

Perhaps because they see that particular strain of neo-classical as a dilution of classical composition. Manticora is pretty cool, especially if you think Blind Guardian lost it after IFTOS or before. I find unintentional cheese more amusing than the deliberate tastelessness of someone like Hammerfall, though I still think power metal is cheesier, if only because those emasculated choir vocals and terrible English inflections make the words inescapable.

okay, now THAT is a viable explanation, however, I highly doubt most people who hold that opinion justify it that way.

Lo and behold my Rhapsody collection!!!!

Old Battle Tales (demo)
Legendary Tales
Symphony of Enchanted Lands <- their best
Dawn of Victory
Rain of a Thousand Flames
Power of the Dragonflame

Don't have the new one yet, but will get round to it at some point.

How can you not listen to songs called "The Dark Tower of Abyss"? Hahah...so frickin' cheesy, it's retro cool. [Actually, it really is a kick ass song with all those classical arrangements].

And you gotta dig the fact that Rhapsody use real massive orchestras and choirs. And they write all the compositions...
