...In front of a 5150. Does it really help THAT much? I listened the files of all the different tube screamers, and without one, and I honestly can't hear a difference between any of them. haha. Anyway, is it really worth spending 150 bucks? Is there THAT much difference?

OK so my friends TS i tried (and compared to my SD-1) must be a shitty one and all other are good.
btw. In my vocabulary a huge difference is when something is ~80-90% different from something else.
IMHO the difference between all TS clones and other quality overdrives is from 5% to 20% - very small to small (the amp makes ~80% of the sound).

it' all about tightening that low end. For live use it doesn't make a MASSIVE difference, but I will never again record without a tubescreamer. It's absolutely essential. But it's about settings as well. If you have the wrong amount of gain on your amp and the wrong settings on the TS you'll have issues as well. Sure, some people prefer other overdrives but I'm not one of them.

it depends on what you're going for. personally, i usually end up turning off my Tubescreamer(actually a Bad monkey) when i record, because i prefer the amp sound without it. Sometimes it sounds right though.
Erm, one vote against the 'shitty Ibanez TS' - same circuit (except 820), lower price (especially considering the TS-7 at $40) than Maxons. Get a TS7, I'll e-mail you the specs to get it from TS-9 to TS-808; if you're not happy you can sell it on eBay for well over $80 considering it's now a 'deluxe modded' Tube Screamer.
Anyway, yes, huge difference unless your pickups already have a really tight low end and pronounced enough mids that it already sounds like you're playing through a TS (except without mild crunch); also, someone posted a while back that in the 5150 loop it can have an even better impact on the sound, haven't tried this though.

You can get those mod kits off ebay and they'll usually ship to Europe....but I believe there's a much cheaper option by going to an electronics store and just buying the chip/resistor if you know what you're looking for. Google search might be able to dig it up.
