Turned away my first band today!

I JUST switched over to an hourly rate in hopes that I will warn off anyone from every composing while recording again.

I'm still cheap and it's still more than doable to record and pay the same as bands used to at my per song rate.

Needless to say, I just told them I'm looking to work with more professional bands, and there is plenty of studios that will take you on.

Bad move... if you have to turn someone away, ALWAYS go with the "my schedule is full until (6month, a year, next decade... but be realistic), We can book the time and you can leave a deposit."

That usually turns bands away without making you look like a dick.

what are you talking about?! if they decide they need to sit and write something, you can sit back and have a drink and rake in the cash... that should be who you want to work with, mang...

I give them a choice of 7 hour block or by the hour. Never per song anymore.

I do the same thing... 8 hour block versus hourly... it always works out to the same thing, though. lol.

It's so unproductive, and the last time it happened I was expected to produce miracles. :Smug:

Why lie to them? I should have just told them they were great while i was at it too....

I'm a pretty honest guy and all I did was tell them the truth. In my eyes this was the best thing to do. I don't want these guys bothering me in 6 months or whenever. I think lying to them is the wrong way to go as they could easily find out that I booked the band that referred them to me after I told them I'm booked up or something. Then I'm just a liar and look like a total tool, yea no thanks I will just be honest and have nothing to hide!

Hey man if your "the guy" in town know for getting good results then I see no problem with how you handled it. If for instance however you are in competition with 3 other guys like I am you take them as you get them.

Yea there is a few studio's here but Ive produced/recorded better work but Ive also done worse work than them. Really depends on the band I'm working with. Though one of the studio's has contacted me and wants to hire me to run his place. Ive been debating it and still need to meet with him and talk details. He does have some sick gear that would be fun to use but I got bills that need to be paid so the money would need to be right.

So yea when a studio contacts you to work there i think its a good thing, and I'm doing something right...
