Twilight Poll I ~ Battle Of The Underrated

These two songs are the most overlooked and underrated on the record. For me it's very very close. But ultimately I choose "The Relic" for the awesome pre-choruses, the magnificently soaring chorus, killer bass groove from Miller, and badass soloing by Romeo and Co. Even though Pinnella shines more on "Orion- The Hunter", and it features some of my favorite keyboard melodies from him(especially in the beginning verses) and better verses.....it is so so close but in the end I've gotta go with the neoclassical gem "The Relic".

I'm not a fan of Orion, but I think The Relic is one of the most underrated 'heavy' Symphony X songs. I love the chorus too.

Great thread, and tough choice!

I like The Relic, but it's only really high points to me are the chorus and the bass groove solo section. Orion also has some great parts, like the verses, pre-choruses, chorus, and cool riffs in the solo section.

Ultimately, I chose Orion, mainly because I find it to be a more melodically interesting song. Pinella and Romeo especially shine on this song, whereas Miller and Rullo shine more on The Relic. And Russell is incredible on both...

I picked Relic, mostly because I really don't like Orion. I agree with BastrdDrmr that the chorus really blows. I don't ahve any emotional attachment to either but...yeah.

Orion doesn't really feel like a Symphony X song to me. I can't put my finger on it, but it sounds like a completely different band for soem reason...

Definitely "Orion - The Hunter", because it is a very different song for the band and in my opinion features Pinella´s best keyboard performance ever.
"The Relic" has this killer bass groove, as you said, though...

I like them both, and on first listen I liked Orion much better, but over the years I've come to appreciate SyX's more "neo-classical" songs, which I think the Relic fits. I love the prechorus in Orion... "My future, detiny............" is great, but in the end I give the Relic the edge.

This same thread, 3 years ago, and I would have chosen Orion. Go figure.

I've never understood why so many fans on this forum think the chorus to "Orion" is horrible? Why is it horrible? Am I missing something?



And some people seem to want every Symphony X song to sound like "Smoke and Mirrors". Doesn't seem very "progressive" to me if you want your favorite prog-metal band to only do one style of song.
