Two down...

Hmmm....here we go again....! Savatage (I know, I know, they already tour!), Jon Oliva 's solo stuff (that would be way cool!!! doesn't everyone recall the reception he got at PP IV with CIIC? And hell, since all the CIIC dudes are with him now...), Edguy (but they'd have to do 'Another Time'!!!), Adagio, Balance of Power, Superior, Pyramaze (I'll go for anyone with Lance King on vox!!!), Theocracy, Sonata Arctica would all be great........but I would pay BIG BUCKS to see ENCHANT there!!!!!!!!!! C'mon Glenn! :)

It seems a lot of people want to see Enchant there. I love the band, they are one of my current favorites. I just always thought they might not be 'metal' enough for a ProgPower. But heck let's see em there.

YES!!!

Couple Things:

  • Opeth - I believe Glenn tried to get them for PP 3 and they wanted too much $. Also the fact they just toured the US on 2 different legs I wonder if it makes sense for them to play PP. It'd still be cool if they did, but I wonder if the effort level is still there from the exp a couple of years ago.
  • Angra- ok..Shaman has NEVER played anywhere in North America. I could be just guessing here, but I wonder how likely it'd be if both Angra and Shaman both would be booked. For 1 thing, they both command headliner status. Also with the differences (socially) between the members of both bands might be rather hard to see happen. Shaman does cover the occasional Andre-era Angra song live so having 2 bands playing possibly the same songs would be odd. I also think the fact Angra already played PP and Shaman hasn't might hold the interest a little higher in the Shaman camp. So my thought if Glenn were to book 1 of the 2 of them, it'd be Shaman. The dilemma could be if Shaman is considered "Progmetal" and the other might be Pain of Salvation, both headliners might be in the "Prog" category. But still, I sure as hell bet if both Shaman and PoS were headlining it would draw huge interest.
  • Gamma Ray - wasn't a headliner.
  • Enchant - would also be great, even though they are not as heavy as a lot of the bands at PP, they are atleast as heavy as some such as Threshold.

I'd like to see Sonata Arctica, Heavenly, Kamelot and PoS the most I think. Children of Bodom, Borknagar,or Opeth (though they tour the US quite a bit) would be my 'oddball' choice.

I'd second having Children of Bodom as the 'oddball' band! It'd be great to see them play for more than 30 minutes. Opeth would be cool, but they seem to tour a lot and they do pretty well on their own.

Neither was Pain of Salvation, technically. PoS only took the 5th slot because Blind Guardian wanted the 4th. I'm sure that in a lineup that wasn't as stacked as the Angra/Blind Guardian/PoS one that PP3 had, Gamma Ray could easily still headline the festival. I don't know exactly what your point was with this, but Gamma Ray are easily as popular as Rage, especially in the U.S., so if Rage can headline Progpower, rest assured that Gamma Ray can. I do know that Gamma Ray is not one of Glen's favorites (at least relative to Angra, from observation) and they did slightly irk the management by playing too long, but i still think they are headliner material.

I'd love to see either band, of course, but you're absolutely right about Children of Bodom. Their crowd-response here in Atlanta was extremely strong, similar to when Opeth first toured here. (Nevermore followed both performances; they must enjoy a challenge.) Five songs for CoB was nowhere -near- enough.

As for Opeth at PP, well...... Maybe if it was a guaranteed 90-min. slot, with a 500-mile exclusionary clause, with a combination of Damnation material as well as their heavier 'classics.' --And "Black Rose Immortal." :D

(I'll also note that Opeth did NOT play Atlanta on their Damnation tour.)

Let's see... As far as repeats go, obviously we can rule out all PP4 bands. Don't forget that PP2.0 bombed, sadly, so bands like Superior and Balance of Power are pretty unlikely candidates IMO. Objectively speaking (read: never mind how much I'd give to see them again :)) I think Threshold are highly likely as long as their own schedule allows it. They were incredibly well received at PP3, and I'd bet good money that Glenn is trying to get them again.

Pain of Salvation is always a crowd-drawer... Well, okay, that place was empty after Blind Guardian, but they are popular. Speaking of BG, I wouldn't rule them out, either... Edguy went over very well with everyone buy me at PP3; sorry, I couldn't even make it through the first song. I can easily live with them if it gets Threshold back. So, my prediction for repeats: Threshold and PoS.

As for bands that have never played PPUSA before: Tad Morose have been mentioned, and I think they're a good possibility. Sonata Arctica are a no brainer IM-somewhat-uninformed-O, as long as they can come to an agreement with Glenn and schedules work out. Sonata Arctica and Edguy on the same bill... Blech. But I don't give a shit if it brings Threshold to our shores again. :)

As for female fronted bands, The Gathering are a possibility and would REALLY draw ticket sales. I n fact, if The Gathering, Sonata Arctica and Pain of Salvation are all on the bill PP5 will sell out in 24 hours, mark my words. Personally, for a female fronted band I'd give my left nut to see Sinergy, who IMO (as I make yet another lame attempt to read Glenn's mind) are a good possibility if The Gathering are a no-go. Remember, the Gathering *have* toured the U.S. before, but they reeaally didn't like it IIRC. Of course PP is very different than playing dives, so Anneke and the guys might be up for it. If they play Mandylion in its entirety I'll take them over Sinergy, but obviously that's not going to happen. :( There's many other FF possibilities, too: Lacuna Coil, After Forever, etc.

Someone mentioned Shaman, and how they make sense after Angra have already played.

So from these bands and a few others, I'll predict:
1. The Gathering (headliner, night two)
2. Sonata Arctica (headliner, night one)
3. Pain of Salvation
4. Tad Morose
5. Edguy
6. Threshold
7. Shaman
8. Seven Witches
9. Riot
10. Pretty Maids

We'll see how wrong I am in a few months... :)

I hate Glenn. You shaved that cool looking beard that made you look like an old geezer....

*snicker*

Ok enough trying to get myself crucified by the saviour of the American metal scene... my pics.

And mind you... my pics are allmighty!

EDGUY
LABYRINTH

ICED EARTH
SHAMAN
KAMELOT

And anything else that rocks. Those five are all I need.

TJ, I think we can rule out a PP slot for Lacuna Coil, as they'll be doing a well-deserved headlining tour between now and PPUSA V.

As for Superior and Balance of Power "bombing" at PPUSA 2.0, or causing it to bomb, I don't think so. In one highly-placed watcher's opinion (and not mine, although I concur), Superior got as strong a response on the second day as anyone did on the first day. I personally know four fans who travelled the length and breadth of the USA just to see them, plus a fan who travelled from the UK, and another from Belgium. And those are just the ones I know about; there were others.

BoP didn't seem to lack for fans there, either.....

I DO think power-metal bands have generally drawn better than prog-metal bands at PP, but then again, the lobby was empty (and the hall was full) for a non-power band last year......

Paul, count me in on that list, I was 1 who came for Superior 1st and foremost. PP 2.0 was the year Glenn sold individual day passes and in order to save $ I only attended the 2nd day which Superior played. I also wanted to see Spiral Architect and Evergrey but Superior was the main draw for me that year.

I would go for them coming back and maybe doing a longer set?..I just recall watching their performance and wanting to hear more. But atleast they did Why

BOP really impressed me when they opened up and I was not planning on the opening band doing that. (and I went out and bought their last two Cds too so they definitely made a great impression - not to mention the lead singer - King? - was amazing live)

And I too was one of the people who SPECIFICALLY came to see SUPERIOR and although I thought their set list could have been better, I thought they tore it up. WHY was just incredible.
