i'm not rahvin, but..
you can ban a person's nickname, thus rejecting further logons. problem here: he can just pick a slightly different name and create a new account.
other possibility is to ban a person's IP address, but this only works if the person in question has a static IP, but in most cases it's dynamic, so you will most probably be out of luck here.
overall you can't really deny anyone access to a forum unless protecting the site with a password which only "trusted" members are given, but that's idiotic and out of question. i guess the best way to deal with types like that is to ignore them totally; most of them want you to get angry, and if you won't show any reaction at all, spamming will be little fun for these narrow-minded fools.

correct.
this morning, both of them started posting thread upon thread without any content beside talking to each other and making fun of existing threads. i deleted them all. they kept on doing it and started flooding the board. they also flooded existing threads, and i removed the messages.
in the end, i found the situation unbearable. i asked mark for help because i couldn't monitor the situation 24/7 and they actually promised they would keep on posting annoying threads repeatedly and on purpose. mark then forbid them access to this board.
so...
@thebigyetti: have your board moderator ask mark to make them stop if they're bothering you. if you don't have any active mod, just send mark a pm yourselves, providing him with the url of the disruptive thread(s).
@vultureculture: here on um only ip's are banned. perhaps groups of them so as to rule out the chance of getting back online with ip's provided by the same isp to the same internet connection. of course it's not a foolproof method, but nobody finds out more than 2-3 different ip's unless he really wants to dedicate his free time to pestering a board.
@mousewings: i assure you they were being horrible today. you've been around a lot and you know how i feel about bans: if i hadn't repeatedly begged them to stop without them taking any heed, i wouldn't have called for help. but today, it really was too much. after the 4th "oh, no, u[sic]m is here" thread by mattias (all deleted) i had to assume he was doing it on purpose. they also took over the manotranquillity thread posting 10 messages in a row faking some plot to post only when i wasn't looking.
it was a massive spam spree and the board would have been impossible to read for anybody. i honestly regret having to resort to these countermeasures, but one thing are stupid jokes, another is jeopardizing this place for everyone.

I'm glad we finally ot rid of U[sic]M. MAtthais posted some on topic stuff, so it's a shame he had to be an asshole and get kicked off this board. At least we don't have anyone on this board who will consistently harass you for not wantinf them here.
A for an IP ban, I think Reno successfully banned U[sic]M from HMAS, so it shouldn't be a problem if it gets that bad.

Sometimes as a mod you have to do things they normally do not want to do, man. I can completely understand how you feel. With my experience with one of the two parties, I can tell you how frustrating it can be and how disruptive they can be for a board and IMHMFCSO you handled the situation well and you took the right action.

well, they both have posted relevant stuff on precious few occasions. i even stood up for u[sic]m a couple of times. but you just don't repeatedly do something i told you not to just to piss me (and the vast majority of others) off.
i hope you all understand i'm no stern pitiless drone and still have afterthoughts about having inflicted any sort of punishment to anyone. still there was no other way to stop it beside this one - you know i tried my long-winded dissections of my every decision at length with the both of them - and stop it i had to, since noone would have liked or even tolerated new threads like the ones we have experienced lately. this is supposed to be a community: if you post something it shouldn't really be the same old soliloquay or chit-chat with one friend. there was nothing shareable in most of what either was posting here, and the proportions were all wrong: for every message actually addressing another user in a respectful way there were dozens of threads and posts devoted only to self-indulgence and flames.

I support your decision 100% Rahvin. Although I had begun to tolerate 'em both, logging in today after 15 or so tries (my server is sill behaving badly) to only find such idiotic posts really tipped my favors against them. I intended to add them both to my ignore list, but this is better for us all.

Yeah, but it was pretty clear that those two... er... "something not so easy to define" elements were born to be banned. Or maybe they were posting from a psychiatric institution, in which case we've deliberately discriminated them without a solid reason, and the right step would be talk to their tutors and know more about how to help them in their mental illness.

Yes, I'm grateful for this. Some places have a lot of people who flame others and cause trouble. The moderators are also too lenient and rarely ban people (and less likely to IP ban people), except in extreme cases (like a member hacking into and disabling the board).

well, what can i say, it surely is not easy to ban people from this board, since you as well want to uphold the right of free speech and a fair share of democracy around here. i'm glad you handled it that way, and i'm sure the vast majority will approve. but somewhere in my troubled mind i still "fear" they might come back with different nicknames. just go figure how many time they must have had and how much of it they spend on irritating this community. if that "hobby" is taken away, they might not fear some effort to get back in the ring. technically, it's no problem.
