Uderrated Gems

Hmmm....... since this is "oldschool" I'll try to stick with oldschool style bands, but not oldschool bands.

Dream Theater - "Images and Words." This band is not oldschool andf the release date is questionable whether it is oldschool or not, but the significance of the release on modern prog-metal music makes it oldschool, so I place it here.

Tad Morose - "Modus Vivendi." Ask ANYONE here how they like this band ? I told the posters here I would hunt them down and kill them one by one if they didn't dig this band, but I didn't have to do that. They loved the band anyway. Great band. Lot's of oldschool style.

Angel Dust - "Bleed" Germany can still put out great powermetal.

Images and Words is an all-time classic, no way it can be underrated bro :) At least not in Europe, almost anyone into prog knows and praises that record.

Angel Dust on the other hand, truly underrated band yeah...

But Tad Morose won't be underrated for too long if you keep getting those checks from Urban :D :headbang:

Same for me!

Amen to that. Let's see if the new line-up can live up to the legacy, but surely I'm going to miss Dirk on vocals.

NP: Quartz - 'Revenge'

Yeah, DT's Images and Words is most certainly not under-rated. It's the only DT album I own, and I started with that one because everyone said it was the best. Still didn't do it for me though. It's okay, certainly has it's moments, but overall just lacks memorable melodies.

Shadow Gallery - Room V

For me it has Moment! that moment being Pull Me Under one of the best metal songs ever!!!

I have to agree here. 'Images and Words' isn't under rated at all. Th elbum went gold here in the states and is held highly by most metal fans I have talked to.

Most DT fans considered it their best, and many no-fans considered it too. If we go for DT I'll call "Falling Into Infinity" underrated.

NP: Renacer - 'Espíritus Guardianes'

Me neither. I consider it to be one of the weaker songs on that album. But thats because I love that album for it sheer progressiveness. Thats just more my thing. Although its a great song.

Cea Serin - ...Where Memories Combine...

I totally agree, great stuff!
I'd add Morgoth "Odium", Riot "The Privilege Of Power" (insane brass parts!), Heavens Gate "Planet E.", King Diamond "The Spider's Lullabye" and Mercyful Fate "9" (maybe their best release in my book)

Thank you for posting this. I loved the record (Riot's POP) as well, and have always felt bad that it seemed to fall thru the cracks or wasn't that well received - I really wanted the brass stuff to work and tried as best as I could to get the right people to be involved creatively. Anyway, good to see it wasn't a total loss and people did pick up on it. The brass players were the best on the east and west coasts ... Brecker Brothers from NYC and Tower of Power outr of Oakland CA ...

Oh yeah I forgot. I was the producer of the record ...

Vinnie Vincent Invasion - ST
Commercial, but still a killer record !

Alcatrazz- Disturbing the peace
who around here knows this album ? One of the best ever, really !

Parts of it actually since I had Alcatrazz greatest hits. And I think it got underrated since Vai and not Malmsteen play on it, which is pretty unfair IMO.

When I attended the G3 a couple of years ago I was wondering if Yngwie and Steve got together and chat about Alcatrazz. Graham Bonnet will go into history graciously after working for guitar geniuses like Blackmore, Malmsteen and Vai few musicians can have that in their resume.

BTW some of the songs in DTP are not my cup of tea but 'Stripper' definitively kick some ass ;)

NP: Gary Hughes - 'Dragon Island Cathedral'

Yeah, I've heard about Tower Of Power playing there, the story was that they were in the same studio as Riot or something... I dig that short "Smoke On The Water" brass before DiMeola cover. :tickled:

SL would mean Steve Loeb, heh...
Man, don't sweat it! You had the guts to try something different and it worked great, as far as I'm concerned. There was never a more insane combination, of breakneck speedy heavy metal and *brass* parts in the songs. Those on Storming The Gates Of Hell and Killer are my favs! :worship:

I think those very long intros to the songs repelled people more than the brass parts... They are really TOO long (I mean 2-3 minutes?!), I'll have to cut them out for listening the album in my car. And that's my one and only remark to the album! The best Riot production to that date, some very interesting arrangements and superb songwriting.

Cheers, Steve!

p.s. well, it's no wonder I'm the only one to mention it, since I'm sort of a resident and official Riot maniac here. :D

as far as underrated goes.the scorpions first few albums like Virgin Killer.alice cooper is great too.i really liked his Special Forces release as well as the earlier Love it to Death...plus many others by him.Nurse Rosetta..heh..
Motorhead-Ace of Spades.

Agreed with SickBoy's comments about Privilege of Power. "On Your Knees" and "Dance of Death" rank among my favorite Riot songs!

Riot has many underrated albums. I guess POP was so because after it came out in relatively obscurity was a hard-to-find item. Also the arrangements including samplers and brass sections made it kind of uneasy for an average metalhead. As for songs I agree also on 'Dance Of Death' but my other fave is 'Black Leather And Glittering Steel'.

NP: Cathedral - 'Oro The Manslayer'

BRENT!!! Definately pick this one up!!! its a fantastic album!!! and if you can find the comic series that went with it! all the better!

I would also suggest "Brutal Planet" and "Dragontown" both are as heavy as a ton of bricks!

Now how could I go wrong with both you and Wyvern recommending it?!!? :headbang: :headbang:
