Upcoming Australian Gigs/Tours by INTERNATIONAL Artists

DECAPITATED
PSYCROPTIC
ORIGIN
MISERY INDEX

DECAPITATED are back! Bands like DECAPITATED don't come along very often, having created a vicious, precise and innovative form of death metal since their inception in 1996. Soundworks Touring are extremely pleased to announce their first shows back, in Australia and New Zealand, to deliver to us all their distinctive brand of technically flawless death metal.

Wacek “Vogg” Kieltyka, guitarist & founding member of the Polish death metal band DECAPITATED, has issued the following statement:

"It’s time to come back! After a two-year break, DECAPITATED is coming back with new members. The official new line-up for DECAPITATED will be announced at the end of December.

“As you all know, the decision to continue the band was really, really hard for me, but everything I do now is to keep DECAPITATED alive. [Vocalist] Covan’s situation has not improved much and he is still in bed and unable to function on his own. He still fights to recover as we speak and we are all still 100% behind him and hope for the best. It has been the hardest thing for me to move on without [brother & drummer] Vitek by my side, but he would have wanted me to continue with the band.

“Finally, I have found some great musicians who can continue the work of Vitek and Covan. At the beginning of April, DECAPITATED will start to play our first reunion shows. We will visit the biggest cities in Australia and play some of the biggest summer festivals in Europe. Don’t worry, we won’t forget about the U.K.! After this, the band will concentrate on the making of a new album! I would like to thank all the people who have supported us all this time."

PSYCROPTIC are technical death metal done the Australian way. Having toured heavily through Europe and the USA over the past 18 months in support of their Nuclear Blast release “Ob(servant)”, PSYCROPTIC perform their first Australian shows in close to a year to remind us all of their clinical, razor sharp delivery of some the most punishing, intricate extreme metal on the planet.

ORIGIN One of the most intense and technical of the contemporary death metal bands, ORIGIN embark on their first pulverising trip to Australia to stake their claim as the leaders of metal’s new wave of extremity and deliver a sonic barrage of inhuman proportions. Prepare your face for battle.

MISERY INDEX sets no limits in their goal of making metal and grind flow together in boundless punishing assaults designed to modernize the classic death and grind metal of the early 90’s. Creating an insane mix of regressive thrashing rhythms, corrupting breakdowns and energetic ferocity MISERY INDEX will make damn sure their first shows in Australia leave a blasting impression.

After two No.1 singles and a string of festival triumphs, DIZZEE RASCAL was officially the feel good hit of the UK summer. Now it’s the Southern Hemisphere’s turn, with DIZZEE heading Down Under to drive the continent bonkers. He broke out of East London’s grime scene with the Mercury Music Prize-winning Boy in da Corner in 2003. Get loose, let go, throw a coupla shapes and get ready to dance wiv DIZZEE RASCAL.

'A taut, thrilling and joyous set in the afternoon sunshine, where Rascal was taken into 100,000 hearts with ecstatically received songs like Sirens, Jus’ a Rascal and smash hit Bonkers. This was one of the performances of the weekend, and, you suspect, Mr Rascal's lifetime." (musicOMH, June 2009)

MELBOURNE - Wdnesday 27 January - BILLBOARD
Presented by RRR & FasterLouder - Tickets: Ticketmaster www.ticketmaster.com.au or 136 100 & Billboard: www.billboardthevenue.com.au

Australia will let its freak-folk flag fly this summer with DEVENDRA BANHART. The people's troubadour came to prominence with the cosmic folk and ethereal vibrato of his 2005 breakthrough, Cripple Crow. In 2009 came his sixth album, What Will We Be, which Rolling Stone calls "the best he’s ever made". In concert, this charming quirk of nature drifts from hushed to frantic, from folk to surf to reggae to heavy psychedelic rock. Call it whatever you like – psych-folk, avant-folk – it’s really "just DEVENDRA BANHART, playing music and enjoying himself" (BBC). Listen to DEVENDRA BANHART play music and you’ll enjoy yourself too.

"A born original, to whom inspiration comes so often and so fast and so hard, that every avenue has to be explored." (The Fader, October 2009)

She’s brash, she’s bold, she’s magnificently mouthy, she’s the one and only LILY ALLEN and she’s bound to be the talk of the summer. A rebellious national treasure in her British homeland, a style icon and 'face of Chanel', ALLEN has been adopted Down Under too, her second album It’s Not Me, It’s You owning the charts in 2009 and going three-times platinum along the way.

"ALLEN's set is a stunning lesson on how to grow up in public. Songs from It’s Not Me, It's You are like diary entries from the front line of cause celeb. These spark nicely with the twenty-something in-crisis lyrical bent of older tunes like Everything's Just Wonderful... ALLEN is irresistible." (thelondonpaper, July 2009)

She mixes sunshine with sass, social commentary with sardonic two-fingered salutes. She's a pop queen for the 21st century, and she’s still not turned 25.

Strap yourself in, hold on, and feel free to scream. Few musical experiences match the roller coaster ride that is THE MARS VOLTA, and in 2010, they'll loop the loop in Australia for the fourth time. You love THE MARS VOLTA? Here're three last chances to feel the thrill when they will play for over two awe inspiring hours at side shows in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne. For the past eight years, composer and guitarist Omar Rodriguez-Lopez and vocalist Cedric Bixler-Zavala have followed their muse in experimental, boundary-breaking and virtuoso directions. Their fifth album, Octahedron, is the latest step in the evolution of one of the most exotic rock bands on the planet. THE MARS VOLTA’s journey continues January 2010.

"Some of the most experimental, technically mind-blowing and original music being released today. What THE MARS VOLTA do at a show is more than just play songs... the band takes you on a journey that is all at once uplifting, wild, shameless and self- indulgent." (Beat, July 2008)

MASTODON
SYDNEY - Thursday 21 January - THE ROUNDHOUSE, UNIVERSITY OF NSW

MELBOURNE - Thursday 28 January - THE PALACE
Presented by triple j & FasterLouder - Tickets: Ticketmaster www.ticketmaster.com.au or 136 100

BIG DAY OUT dares you to look into the eyes of the band that's changing the face of metal: MASTODON. Four Southern gents from Atlanta, Georgia, MASTODON have spent 10 years melding brains with brawn, technical proficiency with sheer ass-kicking thunder. They have become, so says Rolling Stone, nothing less than "the most important new band in metal". Armed with their fourth album Crack the Skye, MASTODON will make the earth rumble.

"They awed the underground with 2004's massive, Moby Dick–themed Leviathan; in 2006, they grabbed the crown with the brutally psychedelic Blood Mountain. It established them as a rare beast: a band respected by diehards for technical bonafides but also by indie rockers for jump–cutting conceptualism. MASTODON are a full–on metal band for people who think they're too cool to like metal." (Rolling Stone, March 2009)

CALVIN HARRIS

MELBOURNE - Monday 25 January - PRINCE OF WALES
Presented by triple j, Channel V & inthemix - Tickets: Ticketmaster www.ticketmaster.com.au & Prince Bandroom www.princebandroom.com.au

You might be ready for the weekend, but are you ready for CALVIN HARRIS this summer? The Scottish super-producer/DJ/chart-topping pop star is a one-man hit-making machine: I’m Not Alone, Acceptable in the '80s, The Girls, Ready for the Weekend and that smash Dizzee Rascal collaboration, Dance Wiv Me. On stage, that big bundle of club and radio hits become hands-in-the-air anthems, with HARRIS fronting a live band that he calls "even more rocking than the tunes", while he's out front proving geeky bedroom musos can be rock stars too. Well, at least one of them can.

"The tunes punch like Tyson as they come out of your speakers... HARRIS has expertly distilled classic elements of club music into a sugar-rush injection." (The Mercury, August 2009)

He's in demand with everyone, everywhere, from pop starlets wanting his production skills to dancefloors demanding his DJ sets. But there's only one place he'll be this summer. People get ready: you don't wanna miss CALVIN HARRIS.

PASSION PIT
SYDNEY - Wednesday 20 January - THE METRO
Presented by triple j & FasterLouder - Tickets: Metro Box Office 02 9550 3666 & www.metrotheatre.com.au +Ticketek 132 849 & www.ticketek.com.au

MELBOURNE - Monday 25 January - THE CORNER HOTEL
Presented by triple j & FasterLouder - Tickets: Corner Hotel Box Office: www.cornerhotel.com or 03 9427 9198

America's new favourite big beat soul popsters PASSION PIT are bringing their musical gifts to the land of Oz. Led by singer/songwriter Michael Angelakos' funk-fuelled falsetto, PASSION PIT’s debut album Manners comes alive with kaleidoscopic soundscapes and plentiful ambition. On stage, they're chaotic, oddball and impossible not to dance to. The only pit we recommend you dive right into this summer – PASSION PIT.

"Their signature song, Sleepyhead, is a magnificent mish-mash of psychedelic synth swooshes, studiously shaken tambourines and cascading dance beats, boasting a chorus catchy enough to become a summer festival favourite. PASSION PIT may be tough to pin down, but by the end of their set the crowd had swollen to a heaving mass of kids desperate to dance." (The Times, February 2009)

RISE AGAINST
SYDNEY - Tuesday 19 January - THE ENMORE THEATRE

SPECIAL GUESTS A DEATH IN THE FAMILY
Presented by FasterLouder - Tickets: Ticketek 132 849 & www.ticketek.com.au & Enmore Theatre Box Office 02 9550 3666

MELBOURNE - Sunday 24 January - THE HI FI

SPECIAL GUEST A DEATH IN THE FAMILY
Presented by FasterLouder - Tickets: The Hi Fi www.thehifi.com.au or 03 9654 7617

Don't just sit there. Get up. Raise your voice. Throw a fist in the air. Stand up and be counted with RISE AGAINST. Chicago's melodic hardcore heroes RISE AGAINST will carry on the proud tradition of protest punk with a set as politically-minded as it is musically punchy. Their latest album Appeal to Reason is "about reaching people and challenging their ways of thought," says frontman Tim McIlrath. If you're up to the challenge, join RISE AGAINST as they give it all, and then some, this summer.

"RISE AGAINST have a truly fanatical fanbase... The crowd simply went nuts, punching the air and roaring every lyric back at the band. There can be no arguing that this band packs a punch, both politically and musically." (The Advertiser, March 2009)

Sunny Day Real Estate / Motion City Soundtrack / Glassjaw / RX Bandits sideshow confirmed

When Sunny Day Real Estate collapsed in early 1995, few would have predicted the impact the Seattle band's music would still be having over a decade later. Now, more than 15 years later the band's original lineup is reuniting to deliver its emotionally charged epics for live audiences once again.

It’s no secret that it’s Motion City Soundtrack’s inconsolably simplistic wit and brilliant live shows that has made them cult heroes. With their bubbly brand of colourful pop punk, Motion City Soundtrack will be bringing their trademark blend of bittersweet melodies and buoyantly catchy tunes to this amazing quadruple bill.

Glassjaw's influence has been staggering, the loyalty towards them astounding and the number of careers owed to them, unfathomable. Although hard to imagine, Glassjaw's live shows are even more intense than their records; don’t miss this rare chance to witness the undisputed legends of post-hardcore in the flesh.

RX Bandits are fearless. In a nervous era of record label focus groups, marketing strategies, and narrowly defined micro genres, it seems that the idea of the Transcendently Great Rock & Roll Band has been lost. Fortunately for us all, Southern California’s RX Bandits have emerged as a tidal wave, a force that shatters all the boundaries set against them. This concept has been the catalyst for the band's ever-growing fan base, which revels in their uniqueness and continues to storm their celebrated, incendiary live shows.

On the back of their performances at Soundwave 2010 the dream line-up of Sunny Day Real Estate, Motion City Soundtrack, Glassjaw and RX Bandits will be performing 2 club shows in Sydney and Melbourne.

That's quite interesting.
I recall at the last Behemoth gig the chap next to me exclaimed in disgust: "is that roadie wearing a Job for a Cowboy tshirt?"
I gave their recent release a spin and actually thought it wasn't too bad.
More like deicide than I was expecting.

jfac are very cool people. nothing wrong with them at all! they are making cool tunes and traveling the world. we can all sit here and stick our noses up but they're kicking ass! behemoth are very good friends with the jfac guys. they tour together a lot.

Devin Townsend

Presented by Blunt Magazine, Metal Obsession and Soundwave Touring

Addiction – “Incredibly close to perfection. Holy. Fucken. Shit” – Global Domination

Some 15 years ago, Steve Vai dubbed the then 19 year old Devin Townsend “The Boy Genius”. Vai was being most sincere, rather than sarcastic.

Since then Townsend has amazed, beguiled and occasionally baffled all comers in numerous incarnations spanning the extreme noise metal of Strapping Young Lad to the intricate melodies of Ocean Machine; Devin has had his hand in almost every genre of music, from industrial metal to progressive rock to ambient sounds. All of these projects had one thing in common: GENIUS.

From the perfection of the wall of noise that was ‘Strapping Young Lad’ to the brilliance of ‘The Devin Townsend Band’, Hevy Devy has embarked on his most ambitious project yet; a series of four albums under his new moniker ‘Devin Townsend Project’. “Each album is essentially a different band or collection of session musicians playing my music.” Townsend explains. The first album ‘Ki’ is a subtle, severe album with the whisper almost being louder than the roar. “Ki will end up being one of the albums of the year” – Chronicles Of Chaos.

The second album in the quadrilogy, ‘Addicted’, is, aptly, addictive. “The energy is boundless, the brightness is blinding, and, yes, Addicted is one of the very best albums in an absolutely ridiculous year in heavy metal.” – Metal review.com

In what seems like an eternity, long suffering Devin Zombies finally get their chance to witness the Devin Townsend Project in Australia throughout March 2010.

I am SOOOO pumped for the Hevy Devy tour! Been waiting years for a tour dedicated solely to his solo stuff. :D

The man is pure genius.

Indeed, the Devmeister is definitely a creative mastermind and I cannot wait for this tour to roll around.

Is it me or are we being spoiled rotten with a lot of these international bands touring here recently and in the near future?

Absolutely man. It never used to be like this! I remember 7 or 8 years back there would be a handful of good tours per year, not there is one every couple weeks. Loving it. (Though my wallet isn't :p)
